Gardening challenged UPDATED WITH PICS
We recently removed everything from the front of the house so basically I now have a blank slate, but the problem is I have NO idea what to do now. Next spring we'll have a landscaper come in and see what we can do, but for now I dont' want it looking crappy.
Does anyone have any temporary, quick fixes that I can do.
Here' a pic of one side right before it was completely leveled to the soil. We had ivy growing wild and had to kill it before we could pull it. Not fun at all. The other side is the same. It's probably 5 feet in length and approximately 2 feet wide.
UPDATED 10/1
Here are some before, during and after shots of my front yard.
It just goes to show you that you can do something if you put your mind to it...and also back breaking labor!! I'm now off to the longest bath in history!!
We still have to the other side, but that's for next weekend!! Image Attachment(s):

Re: Gardening challenged
I just had all the ivy removed from my back yard too.
There are a lot of things you can do with that space.
I would recommend Cheap Sams in Holtsville for Plants, bushes, and Flowers - or if you cannot go there...Any Nursery, Lowes or Home depot. I just picked up 3 Bushes this week and a Bunch of Flowers that Will stay until winter at least.
For Flowers: Mum's Asters Black eyed Susans
For Bushes: Ask for recommendations - something that doesnt turn brown during the winter.....Stays its color. Make sure you check the height, if they spread, etc....
Put Down Preen - For IVY once it is all gone.
Then Put down Black, Red Cedar Mulch - and a few solar lights...
Also Edge off the area with a Brick Wall....2 or 3 high...They come in a variety of colors.
Once you get started.....You will see how great it can look....Believe me.
Scott
Here is our front Flower Beds - Now the flowers are huge - but this was when we first planted them...

Re: Gardening challenged
If you don't want to plant anything yet, I would just removed all the weeds and put potted mums out for the fall. We just did our front gardens in August. We went to a garden shop with pictures and measurements and they designed it for us. It was easy! We only got evergreen/bushy things for now. We will plant flowers in the springtime.

Did you put down preen under the mulch?
Yup...I did just like you told me too!! I even put down that porous sheet that blocks the weeds, and then just dug out the holes for the plants.
Was it ok to do that?? or was that overkill??

what porous sheet?
It's called Weed Block. It looks like a big plastic bag and it comes in a roll. You cut it to the length of wherever you want it and lay it down under the mulch. It's to prevent anything from growing underneath it, which is why I cut the holes for the plants.
