gas and breastfed babies
Hi,
My DD is a month old and she has terrible gas (and i mean she could win a contest!) sometimes she wakes up crying and you hear it pass and then she goes back to sleep. Is this normal and is there anything i can do. She is breastfed except for 2-4oz of formula at one feeding. I did put a call in to the doctor but i'm waiting to hear back. i feel so bad for her.

Re: gas and breastfed babies
my DD has had gas since day 1. I ask my DH all the time if it was him when I hear it.
When she wakes up, she stretches and kicks her legs and let's them rip it's like a machine gun
I have not given a bottle since last week, so know I know it's not the bottle, it's probably what I eat. She's not too bothered by it though.

Re: gas and breastfed babies
My DD is the same way. She will be calm or asleep and then her whole body tenses, she gets all red like she is pushing and starts to cry. Then she passes gas or we can hear her going in her diaper and she goes back to being calm. She only gets BM. It breaks my heart because she looks like she is in so much pain. I would love to find a solution.

are you eating foods that could be making her gassy? What bottles do you use when you do feed her bottle?

Re: gas and breastfed babies
have you ladies tried massage?
When my DD was about 5 weeks old I learned some massage techniques, including for her bowels and when she was having issues, and I think upset from it, it seemed to help and calmed her.

I dont think I eat gassy foods. I have started drinking a cup of coffee every morning after giving it up for 9 months. I havent started giving her a bottle yet, she just turned two weeks yesterday.

Found on BabyCenter:
Strange as it may seem, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, spicy foods, and potato chips won't affect your milk, because the gas that you might experience from these foods is a local reaction in your GI tract.
The most likely culprit for your baby is dairy products in your diet — milk, cheese, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, or any food that has milk, milk products, casein, whey, or sodium caseinate in it. Other foods, too — like wheat, corn, fish, eggs, or peanuts — can cause problems. Don't severely limit your diet on the hunch that your baby might have a food sensitivity, but if you suspect that a particular food is giving your baby trouble, you could try eliminating it for a week to see what happens. Some foods take longer than a week to completely clear your system, but you should see improvement in your baby's behavior within a few days.
