Well I prefer wood because there is nothing like it but it is a PITA!

Cleaning the ashes, bringing in wood, it's "dirtier" and more work to get it going & tend to it For us it's worth it thou.

There is nothing like a roaring wood fire on Christmas Eve!

Gas fireplaces will give you the effect of woodburning (some even make the crackle noises now) without the mess.

That said, I still prefer a woodburning fireplace. I love everything about it - the smell, tending to the fire, gathering the wood and the sounds.

i think wood, because with gas- your paying for the heat but wood is free and an efficient way for you to heat your home.

We switched about 3 years ago from wood to gas. Although nothing is like wood- I found that my house smelled like it hours after I used it and it was dirty. Now I hit a button and it looks just as good(and heats) without the mess or smell. If you get a realistic looking log set it's very hard to tell the difference.

We can do both with ours. Havent used it yet since we moved in this past May!

i have a gas fireplace and when we first bought our house, i didn't like it. now i love it!

DH stokes it in the winter, which warms up the house nicely and saves $$ on the gas bill. It has a nice smell and gives a cozy feeling.

That said, I think wood fireplaces are nicer to look at, especially when you've got a nice mantel.

I like a wood burning stove. Its what I grew up with. We just put one in our home last winter...and it really heated up our house. It was so cozy.

I have a gas fireplace....we have realist looking logs and I just flip and switch and it turns on...It warms the whole first floor very quickly, So we don't need to keep it on long. I love it!

I love wood but have gas now and I love it. We converted my fireplace.
We read up on it..that being said--a wood one smells great but #1--it does not heat the house--the heat goes out the flume--(whatever that word is)
its not good for anyone to breath--it collects in your lungs and nose--hence-you blow your nose its black boogers.
It is not good for any allergies or anyone with asthma.
But..I still love the smell.
My fireplace cut my heating bill by 1/2 last year too.
