Geico after an accident
DH was in an accident. He's okay but the car isn't. The other driver was at fault and has Geico. We got the police report and contacted Geico on Monday. On Tuesday Geico said that someone was being sent to look at the car. Because we didn't hear anything, we called Geico on Thursday and was told that nothing had changed on the file. How long will DH and I have to wait for an answer? DH is currently without a car and we'd like to know if the car will be fixed or if we should start shopping for a new one.

Re: Geico after an accident
I think it took all state a week to total out our car
but I didn't get a check for 3 weeks
we had a thrid car at the time - and I was pretty mad at my DH about totally a 1 month old car - so we weren't in rush to buy a new one

Re: Geico after an accident
This car is a 97 and has over 120,000 miles on it. Ironically, we were just about to bring it in for a new timing belt. Doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Re: Geico after an accident
My car wasn't even close to totaled... but someone hit my parked car while driving drunk a few years ago and we both had Geico. IIRC, Geico was out to assess the damage within a week. Once they saw the car, though, I had an answer on how much they were paying the same day. The check came quickly thereafter. I thought it went pretty quickly and smoothly -- but in fairness, my car was still able to be driven. Had I been without a car, I think it would have seemed interminable.
I'm sorry you're going through this and I hope you get your answer ASAP. If you ask for a firm date and time, are they able to do that for you?
Good luck!

Re: Geico after an accident
I should add - the reason I didn't get a check for 3 weeks was b/c the car was 1 month old- and extremely rare
I have a policey that gives you replacement cost- and they were having a hard time coming up with a number
but when they did- it was more then fair- considering the situation

Re: Geico after an accident
Geico is the worst with paying up after an accident! I had to wait a few weeks when i got in an accident when i was in college. My parents have been waiting for 2 months for damages from when I car crashed through their neighbors fence and messed up their lawn and landscaping. This is part of why I switched from Geico to State Farm.

so you went 3rd party with the loss?
It can take longer that way.
An option should of been to go through your company (in hopes they are better) and paid your deductible, let them deem the damages or salvage the car, and issued the ck to you and THEN went after the other party for all (meaning your deductible, rental etc).
Usually that is a way for things to be handled a little faster.

Too little too late. DH and I are relatively young and inexperienced in the world of car accidents. This is what DH's father told us to do. The kid was at fault and he's admitted it. Oh, well. You live you learn.

Not necessarily too late...But that is up to you.
Its what I do and i just know how my company works and I find that if I get a call I give both options and at times, have had ppl come back saying the other party wasnt helpful or quick. So I understand.
I would call Geico and since you are out of a vehicle, have they offered you rental? Esp being their policyholders fault, they should be paying for a rental.

We spoke to Geico about a rental and they said we would have to contact our insurance company (which we plan on doing). Since I will be contacting them, should I also have them look at the car and do what was suggested above?

Yes, call Metlife, see if you do have rental. With rental, its on a reiunbusement basis so some will be out of your pocket anyways but I STILL would fight it with Geico. If it wasnt for their insured hitting your DH, he wouldnt be out a vehicle.
So call Metlife, you can let them know about the recent accident and how you went after the other party but its taking a bit. see if they can take some action.
