Generator information....where to buy? which one? Pros? Cons? Information please.

I want to be prepared for the next bout of extreme weather. Many of us are thinking of getting one so I bet this can be helpful.

Re: Generator information....where to buy? which one? Pros? Cons? Information please.

Here is what I have come across on my research.

It all depends what you want to power.
If you are looking for just basics like your fridge, a few lamps, etc, then one of the Home Depot jobs is fine.

If you want to power electronics like an HDTV be sure the generator has something called clean power or a voltage regulator- meaning the power is steady and won't go up and down. Apprantly that can damage sensitive electronic equipment.

Also bear in mind that things like your stove and your oil burner- are probably hard wired- and cannot be plugged into a generator because they dont' have a plug.
So if you wanted to run those things you would need to get the generator installed on what is called a transfer swtich- to your main breaker box... this is done by an electrician.

Some of the better ones we looked at online- were clost to $1000 and up.

But for the basics like keeping your fridge running and some lights, a coffee pot, a hot plate, the cheaper ones will work fine.

With the gas shortage you might have more headaches trying to keep one running

And I know this is a stupid question but how long can it run for? Like If you are out of power will it run for a week? Is it more expensive?

this is the BEST -- i mean, it is an absolute lifesaver, you feel like you are not inconvenienced or have to suffer at all. the downside: they run a little more money and you usually have to have a licensed gas guy hook it up/set it up but it is WORTH IT!!! And it's great because you set it up and forget it - then you leave it for whenever you need. best thing ever.

I'm asking for this for Christmas, birthday, Valentine's, anniversary, Mother's Day... DH was telling me he's surprised how surprised he is that I'm "not rolling well with Sandy". I have three LOs 4 & under plus I run a business out of our home, less than a mile from the bay. No, I'm not "rolling" well...but having a generator permanently hooked up to our gas line so we can have power in a crisis without worrying about a fuel shortage would def make me feel better.

Yes it will run indefinitely. During Irene we lost power for 7 days.

How much do electricians charge for installation? And does anyone know what the daily cost averages out to?

Just keep in mind that natural gas lines can be shut off in a storm. There are several neighborhoods that have their gas lines shut off because of flooding, even if some houses are OK.

I'm curious about this as well. My grandma has one (she lives in another state), and said it's a great thing to have.

I have a natural gas generac generator
It does almost the entire house, all the necessities and yes if you live south of merrick road there is a good chance they will cut the gas lines during a major storm, i know they did this during gloria and they have cut natural gas during this storm.

I have had mine for 5 years and we have had a bunch of outages, not just storm related we are almost 2 miles north of sunrise and have never had the gas cut.

My boss paid $1500 to the electrian for his install to his breaker box.
His is not powered by natural gas though-so he didn't have to have it plumbed to gas lines
