Re: genetic tests
not to frighten anyone, but i seriously caution anyone to make decisions to get tested before ttc, completely based on ethnic backgrounds.
in my case, i knew that i was a carrier of a trait that often runs in people of mediterranean descent. i wasn't too concerned when i married my husband, who not only isn't mediterranean, but he is of a different race.
we got pregnant naturally and unfortunately miscarried. during this time dh was tested and we found that he doesn't have the same trait as me, but another trait that also affects the hemoglobin. not only did his doctor say "don't worry, they are different traits," but my former gyno said the same! they are something to worry about, because combined they have the possibility of causing a less-commonly known, but equally severe and life-threatening blood disorder in our future children.
after finding out this news, we went for genetic counseling and stopped ttc, until i found out all the facts. i felt it would have been careless and selfish to continue to ttc, without being informed, just to meet my own needs to become a mom.
i am not an advocate for hypercondria (sp?) and a stressful, filled with worry pregnancy, but i am certainly not for making blind, uninformed decisions, that could potential harm my child.
