Getting medical records
Is it legal that Dr's charge PER PAGE of medical records ?
I have heard this done before, but Im wondering on what our rights are as patients. This is just nonsense. I thought I heard that we are entitled to all our records.
I got my son's records with no problem, but just tried to get records for my mom and she got a letter asking for $45.

Re: Getting medical records
I believe they are not allowed to charge more than 75 cents per page.

Yes, unfortunately they have the right to charge you for copies per page but no more than $.75 pp.

Re: Getting medical records
They can legally ask you for 75 cents a page. Sometimes when it is sent doctor to doctor there is no fee. HTH

Re: Getting medical records
they can only charge you for their personally dictated/written progress notes. Labs, EKGs, etc are free. this is covered under the Sunshine Law.

Re: Getting medical records
I order people's medical records all of the time for my job. Doctors can charge up to $.75 per page, the above ladies were correct. Not all doctors charge though, and they do not charge to send them to another doctor. They can also charge you for the postage that it costs them to ship you the records. If you're getting them b/c you're switching doctors, have your new doctor order them.
As for the narrative reports that I order, well the sky is the limit. Most doctors that I deal with charge over $1k for a 1-2 page report, most of which is a standard form that they input the individual's information into, and it takes their staff a few minutes to do. They just read and sign. Yet, doctors still cry about losing money from the HMOs
