Getting Permits for Fence Installation- with POLL

Now matter where you live, would you get a permit to install your fence?

Do you have to get one or get in trouble with the town?

How much do they usually cost?

What is the point of the permit?

Does it protect the homeowner in anyway?

Thanks for any information you can give me.

Re: Getting Permits for Fence Installation- with POLL

I got a permit for my fence installation. My neighbor is a looney and he didn't want us to put up the fence (he doesn't like anything we do). We wanted to cross every "t" and dot every "i" and make sure we did everything by the book. After we got the permit, put up the fence, the town came and inspected again to make sure it was put up correctly. We ended up getting a Certificate of Completion afterwards from the town.

The permit was $135.
We filled out the application and brought it to the town with documents from the Fence Company. I'm not sure where you are but if I can help in any way, please let me know.

BTW: We did not have an existing fence on any side of the property. We also got a "stake out" to ensure the property lines were being respected.

we didn't get one because we were only replacing an old rusty chainlink fence with a new pvc fence; so i figured if anything, the neighbors would be grateful.

I choose other.

In my town, as long as your replacing what is there already and not adding to it or taking away we don't need it.

If you are adding, I would get a permit. You have no idea if the town happens to be driving around and stops to question your fence company and they could stop the job and you may be fined.

Not sure about cost but I couldn't imagine it being a lot. I just picked up a plumbing, electrical and building (for framing) for $196.

You could also just call and see what they say.

We had a survey done. It cost us around $900. They charged us $50 per marker, plus the cost of the survey.

We did it because it was a new fence - and we wanted our neighbors to feel ok with it.

I didn't get one. If you are just replacing an existing fence and not changing the lay out I would think you wouldn't think you need one.

As long as it was under a certain height you didn't need a permit.

It really depends on where you live. I was required to get one to replace an existing fence.

I made sure to get it because if you put the fence up without it, they can make you take it down or pay a fine.

we live in huntington and the site said you only need permits for fences over 6 ft - we have a 6ft fence - so no permit required

i agree. where i live you absolutely need one if you're replacing a fence that already exists. you don't need it if you're replacing one panel. it's always a good idea to check with your town or village

I would look into it. Because of a handshake agreement that was made in the 60s, our fence is exactly on our property line, not one foot in which would make it code. So, if we moved and our neighbors moved - even replacing the old fence would make it NOT up to code.

You never know who wants to make your life a little harder LOL

Re: Getting Permits for Fence Installation- with POLL

The fence company should be getting the permit for you. The Village of Valley Stream has a bunch of ballbusters working for Village Hall and they will ticket you for everything. It really really is a simple process and minimal cost and definitely worth it because it covers your a$$ down the line.

A few years ago, my ILs had an issue with a neighbor on their block. The previous owner had changed the driveway so that it was at the front of the house and not the back. Well a stop sign had to be moved to make this change so clearly a permit had to have been filed for since the Village moved this sign. Because some jerkoff on their block did not like my DH's expedition parked in the driveway, they called the Village and the Village wanted the permits because they didn't have it on file. It wasn't until someone mentioned the stop sign being moved did they find the paperwork. They still don't know what neighbor said something, but someone always will. Just cover your a$$!

I forgot to say that our fence permit was something cheap like $25.
