Getting rid of a fireplace?

we have a cape with an added on backroom.

This room has a fireplace and its own chimney. We want to get rid of the chimney and fireplace. Has anyone done this? Is it hard to do?

I have never done it but I just wanted to say that fireplaces add value and are a good selling point if you ever want to re-sell.

I was going to say the same thing- according to Richard from flip this house - it's the number one thing buyers want

I trust him, he is loaded

Re: Getting rid of a fireplace?

We had 2, and they were in side by side rooms, so we got rid of one and put in sliding glass doors instead. I wasn't there the day they did it, but by the time I got home, there was no sign of it....and no mess either. I think they just chipped away at it.

Re: Getting rid of a fireplace?

even if it is really old and crappy looking? it doesn't even look nice. The brick on the inside and out is disgusting.

We had an ugly corner fireplace the was red brick and not even done nicely and we had most of it covered with sheetrock and the rest we refaced--it was just recently finished and it looks great I can't wait to use it. The chimmney can always be covered I see people put vinyl siding on them.

Re: Getting rid of a fireplace?

I wouldn't get rid of it either. There was a post about painting the brick on a fireplace not too long ago on this board. I know DH's cousin did this also and it came out beautiful.

You could try painting it and adding a new mantle - you might be surprised what a little paint can do! Good luck! Chat Icon

I agree. It might be better to cover it than to eliminate it. Is it in disrepair or beyond repair?

ditto. I would never get rid of a fireplace. I would work at it to make it better.
