Getting rid of cable?
Anyone get rid of cable altogether? I'm tired of paying such high prices for channels we hardly watch. I tried to negotiate a promotion but they won't budge. So, now I'm wondering if it's possible to get rid of it altogether. Maybe use Netflix/ Prime and/or Hulu for TV and movies. I worry about losing the networks though. Anyone do this or have any other suggestions? Thanks!

Getting rid of cable?
We just did it last week. Our bill went up $20 in one month and it was time. We kept basic cable and have Hulu and Netflix. We're not missing cable at all.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
A friend of mine did it, it was more because of her DH. They actually like it, they watch their shows using Roku.
We have Roku too but we also have cable and I agree that their prices are ridiculous!

Re: Getting rid of cable?
About 3 years ago! Best decision I ever made! We have Netflix, Hulu, and I was already an Amazon Prime member so we use that to stream TV as well (on Roku and PS3). Now you can even get Showtime and Starz through Amazon. We just signed up for Starz and they have such great movies and shows!

Re: Getting rid of cable?
Hi
Can someone please explain this to me as if you were talking to a four year old??
What is Hulu and Roku?? It sounds like something I'd order off the menu at a Japanese restaurant.
And this Netflix thing, I have never bought in to that, but Amazon Prime too -- like, I have Prime for the shipping on items but I didn't know anything about "streaming". I don't even really know what that word means When I say that I *REPEL* technology, believe me, I do!
So, basically, how much does the above cost?? So, you get these services and pay them monthly --- and then you say bye to cable, and it saves you HOW MUCH? Like, what's the difference in cost between the two?
And -- then, like, how do I watch certain things? Basically, what I watch is: Wendy Williams , Blue Bloods, Chicago PD, and from time to time Real Housewives. Legit, that's the extent of what I watch.
So help me understand how I can do this. As of right now, I pay like $150 a month for Verizon -- it's a lot. That is for two boxes and DVR. I have these "Smart" televisions by boyfriend told me to buy because they are "good". IDK what they do. I see a bunch of features lol. The only thing I ever do with them is put on Baby Einstein using the YouTube feature for my son.

Getting rid of cable?
We just downgraded to basic channels 2-13. My bill went down to $112 with internet, phone and cable. We have one of those boxes that gets you all the movies and shows you want. It even streams live tv, so no need for cable at all. But eliminating it would have raised my bill since I get the discount for all three.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
I don't think I could ever. I am not a fan of anything on netflix and I like my lifetime movie network, all the kids channels for DD, my odd ball channels that show old sit coms from the 70s and 80s I just chalk it up to a necessary evil and pay the bill
Plus On Demand movies are way better than netflix streaming. There are like NO recent movies on netflix streaming It sucks.
We have fios. I love it

I could easily do it but dh is a big channel surfer, so it wouldn't work for him.

If you have a Smart TV, then you don't even need to worry about a Roku box- which is basically the same thing as Apple TV or a PlayStation 3. Your SmartTV only needs to have access to a wireless network, so you'll need an internet service provider (probably through Verizon or TWC or someone else) and a wireless router. On your TV you download "apps" or "channels" like you would on your phone or tablet. We have tons of free channels as well as the ones we pay for- NBC, FX, some weird movie channels that I don't even know what they are. Hulu is a paid "channel" that you can stream TV show seasons that are on the air now. Netflix is also paid and is generally behind at least a season of shows on now, but they generally have ALL the seasons of the show available to binge watch. They also have a lot more old movies and TV shows, a lot of kid shows, etc. The one thing you can't do is just sit there and flip channels for live TV. That doesn't bother me as I never did that anyway, but some people, like my mom, like to channel surf. If you have Amazon Prime, you already have access to watch whatever is Prime eligible on your phone, tablet, computer, or smart TV. You don't need to pay extra for that. For all my paid channels and internet, I pay about $85 a month, whereas before I was paying $250 a month for 3 cable boxes, DVR, and internet through TWC. WELL worth it to me!
ETA: Not sure about Wendy Williams, but I guarantee all those other shows are available on Hulu or possibly even Amazon Prime.

I was just talking to Peter and he's like but Wendy is on channel five isn't it?? And he's like wouldn't that be covered under basic cable?? So yeah I think he is right. So I would just need basic cable and an internet provider, really, is all.

Yes ma'am! I think you can still get basic cable for free, too. I think even NY1 is included in it.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
Many of our friends got rid of cable and use Netflix/hulu. I think Netflix will shortly lose a lot of business to amazon prime since many people already have amazon prime and the streaming is included.
I keep cable to watch Game of Thrones and Homeland. DH has tried to get rid of cable in the past but he likes to watch espn and sports and would want to watch that live.

We did! We still get basic channels (FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC, CW, PBS) and we also have Netflix and Amazon Prime.
We buy the season of walking dead on amazon since we like to watch that in more or less real time.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
We did 2 years ago.
all we have is Netflix and our friend's HBOGo password.
we own a lot of DVDs (mostly DS's movies) that we watch over and over.
BUT, we're not trend followers. We don't need to watch the latest show that everyone is watching. We also don't need things NOW. We're willing to wait until it comes to Netflix.
A lot of my shows air online the next day for free, so I just watch them there a day later.
DH misses sports occasionally, but since we had DS he'd rather spend the time playing with him than watching his favorite teams.

Re: Getting rid of cable?
Thanks for all the responses! I'm thinking maybe a good way to start would be to downgrade to just the basic network channels. I don't really watch anything that's not on a network, I really don't watch TV much. Dh has one or two shows that we probably couldn't get with just basic cable- Discovery channel shows but maybe we could get an app for discovery on our fire stick? We already have netflix and prime video. I appreciate all the feedback!

Does your dh "conveniently" run to the store on days his teams are on? lololol
