GETTING RID OF FLEAS...
I have a rottie and a kitten, and last night while playing with the kitten I found a flea on her. I immediately killed it, but now I'm afraid that there are more and that the dog will get them. We have hardwood in all of our rooms except one (which has carpet).
My questions is...what are some home remedies to get rid of them? I have 2 small children, so Borax is out of the question. If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate them...TIA!!

Re: GETTING RID OF FLEAS...
to find out if you have a flea problem.....you can lay down a white sheet on the floor..... leave it there for as long as possible.... come back to check and see if you find flea dirt or fleas themself on it. Some people put a bowl of water on the floor with a candle as well.... i think they are attracted to that. but i didn't do this.
if you find that you have a flea problem... use this stuff called Sevin. its a flour like substance that you can buy in the gardening section of a hardware store. Put it on all surfaces.... and leave the house for a little while. Come home and vaccum it up. throw out the vaccum filter and replace with a new one.
I had a MAJOR flea outbreak. My indoor cat got fleas from an ex friends dog (we are not longer friends, but not becuase she gave me fleas... ) and i bombed a bunch of times!! NOTHING worked until someone told me about this sevin stuff!! I wish I knew about it earlier.. would have saved me hundreds of dollars!!! ugh!!
The woman who told me about sevin said she put it directly on her dog. I didn't put it on my cat (she had a flea bath instead) so IDK much about that.
If I ever saw a flea again... id run straight to the hardware store for sevin!!!
good luck!! fleas are not easy to get rid of... so taking care of them ASAP is important!!

Re: GETTING RID OF FLEAS...
i just had fleas on mine...TIS THE SEASON, LOL. I bathed them immediately with Hartz flea and tick shampoo...then I sprayed them with a flea and tick spray (tea tree / eucalyptus also works well too) then I put the frontline on them...checked them as I blow dried them and afer I was done then had my hubby quarantine them while I vacuumed all couches and carpets. I sprayed the carpets and couches with the same flea and tick spray i used on the dogs and washed all the bed linens...vacuumed under the bed and the bottom of the box spring(my dog likes to lay under the bed and all over the room. Also sprayed the bottom box spring with the flea and tick spray. it's been a week and haven't seen anymore since.

Re: GETTING RID OF FLEAS...
My sons hamster had mites so I researched it and this worked like a charm. It's also great for fleas for any pet. It's topical use only. 1 c water, 1/4 cup Listerine (regular stuff no flavored stuff) 1/4 cup of witch hazel. Put in a spray bottle and spray them down avoiding face of course. You could make a larger batch and do a spongebath. Does not need to be rinsed although with a cat, they might want to lick themselves so it might be worth letting her dry and then rinsing her. It was amazingly effective.

Re: GETTING RID OF FLEAS...
There is a pill you can give them that kills all the adult fleas on them - that will stop the biting.
Capstar
That won't kill the eggs and larva so you allso need an ointment like Frontline Plus.
Your vet will have these items, might even be able to buy Capstarat Petco
As others said, when you vacumm you need to take the bag outside when done.
You might want to treat your lawn as well, you can get a bag of pest control to spread on the lawn for $15 at home depot. Its red and it said pest contol on it; kills ants, fleas, ticks, grubs, etc

Re: GETTING RID OF FLEAS...
I am dealing with the occassional flea on my dog lately as well. We have hardwood floors with area rugs. I bought a flea comb and bursh my dog with is regularly & I make sure he is up to date with his front line every month. This is key bc it will not only kill the fleas but I think make them sterile so they can not reproduce. I would suggest washing all your bedding in hot water and vaccuuming the house really well everyday for a week. Hopefully you will catch the problem early and it wont be so bad!
I found one flea on my dog recently and then 2 more a week later. I did all the above and haven't seen once since.
