Getting rid of tenure?
Has anyone heard this might happen?

I know a lot of changes are being made in NJ- I am sure it's just a matter of time before we see something similar in NY. Though the evaluation deal we made last spring will really put a dent in tenure too because there will be no more due process. If you get a U rating 2 years running, I believe, they can dismiss you.
Unfortunately because up to 40% of the eval will be test scores I think you'll see a lot of teachers get canned, especially in poorer districts.

In NY provisions are being built into new teacher contracts to have a provision for revoking tenure for teachers who receive unsatisfactory ratings for, I believe, more than 2 years. This is connected to a certain type of state aid that school districts can receive. Basically teacher unions and districts now need to write into contracts the steps for determining how a teacher would be rated "unsatisfactory" and I believe a portion of it must be student achievement. I hope I'm getting this right, this is what I've heard.

I don't know that I disagree with this but I get nervous about what type of power thr admins will h ave . If they just don't like u can u be gone?

this is what i worry about, but thinking about it makes it similar to any other job i've held- there wasn't tenure there! of course i would be bummed if it happened since by the time i would be hired- it would be with those clauses.

IMO there will be ways admins can unfairly screw you. For example, you can get the classes of kids who are struggling the most, so if they don't do well on the test, well, if you get classes like that for two years in a row, then you're done.
Granted, test scores will only be 40%, but again, if an administrator wants to get rid of you it does not seem like it will take too much to make the rest of the eval negative.
This is definitely a factor in my choosing to leave- there have been years when I've had kids who didn't do well on the test despite my best efforts. And I worked for a few crazy APs- and I am sure there are more out there. If you are looking for a teaching job, I would really hold out for something in a well-performing suburb because then at least you will have decent test scores to back you up.

In NYC they are making it much harder to gain tenure, that much I know. I think those w/tenure will be "grandfathered" in but I feel sorry for the new teachers.

Yes- if you have it, they can't take it. I am not sure about the new NYC requirements in terms of where you are- for example if you're up for it this year, are you subject to it? And it also seems like it targets people in testing grades and subjects.
With the new evals, it's there but much weaker.

yup! this is what we are being told also. the law was already passed this past summer. i believe 40% of your evaluation will be dependent upon student scores. if you receive 2 unsatisfactory grades in a row, you'll be brought up for termination, tenured or not.

The future is scary for us. I work in a horrible area. No parental involvement. I bust my a$$ daily for these kids and they can't pass. What I do in class is not reinforced at home. For example I gave an extensive packet with a practice ELA and a practice math test for Feb break. Gave it out on Thursday before break. 1/2 of them told me on Friday they finished it...basically they put any old answer because there is NO way in hell they could have finished it.
All I hear is how horrible teachers are...NOTHING about the parents. Where are they? Aren't they responsible? Guess NOT!

New here...I have been mostly lurking but have wanted to join this board for a while!Totally agree!!! It's so not fair to those of us who work harrrrrd yet do not have the test scores to back up our hard work...and there are so many factors (like parental involvement) that go into test scores that are not under our jurisdiction...something has to be done to take this into account if there are going to be new evaluation processes

What if you have tenure and move districts? I'm really nervous about my position (not state mandated) when the tax cap goes into effect. I'm pretty sure i will be going back to my old subject area, but it means doing 2 years probation again.

I know I have to do probation again. But if they hypothetically get rid of tenure and I had to switch cert areas or districts would I still be eligible to get it again after 2 year, if I'm grandfathered in?
