Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
DH cleaned out the fireplace yesterday and dropped the bucket of ashes.
Even though it's been vacuumed VERY well, I still smell it.
What can I do other than candles and Oust??

Febreeze?
It's more in the air than in the fabrics.
It smells like the first second you step in the shower after a long night at a smoky bar.

Re: Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
I think opening the windows and maybe using a fan to blow the inside air out the window may be the only way.
Or what about one of those Ionic breeze things?

I would try the window thing, but I'm afraid the baby would be too cold.
And I'm looking for a quick fix.
I know, I know. I ask then I don't like any of your answers.
I appreciate the thoughts.
I guess I'm looking for home remedies for air freshening. Does that make sense?

Re: Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
What type of surface was it dropped on? rug? wood floor? If it was a wood floor maybe try mopping the area with baking soda and water or vinegar and water and then I would febreeze and light a scented candle for a few days with a window slightly opened.

Re: Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
this will sound weird but pour a cup of white vinegar and leave it out. It's known to absorb odors. You couls alsoo put lemon or orange in a cup of water and put it in the microwave for 20 secs. The citrus will overpower any other smell in the air. I had a co-worker do this whenever someone burnt popcorn in the microwave and it worked everytime

And don't worry about DS -- it's a proven fact that babies get overheated much more quickly than they get cold. So you can open the windows if you want.
I was going to suggest baking powder and vinegar too. Good luck!

I was going to suggest the same thing..
you can also put some lemons or oranges cut into a pot with water and simmer it on the stove. Just watch the water doesnt all evaporate. You can add water to the pot as needed until the smell is gone

Re: Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
White vinegar absorbs the smell of everything - if it's in the carpet, try baking soda ........ otherwise, open the windows when the baby goes to sleep - Can you close the door for a little while? .......

Re: Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
I am addicted to "How Clean is Your House" on BBC America, and those women swear by essential oils. They use 10 parts vodka with one part essential oil (any scent) in a spritz bottle. I am going to try it myself because we have cat smell issues and I don't want to use candles.

Re: Getting Smokey Smell Out of the House
If it's moreso in the air, I would steep some cloves or lemons and oranges on the stove in hot water. Your home will smell like apple pie or a citrus grove!
