Anything with Disney princesses on it. I got my little cousin this Disney Princess tea-set and a bunch of little dolls with different dresses and shoes and she loved it. We all drank tons of tea.

anything dress-up, princess, kiddie make-up if the parents are ok with that, play kitchen toys, babydoll things (high-chair, etc), barbies

my niece will be 4 this year. I asked SIL what to get her, I was told she is getting a DS so she wants Super Mario Bro game.  What ever happened to dolls?????

I think it depends on individual situations. My daughter gets dolls for every occasion. Havent ever even thought of getting her the DS. She plays bowling on our Wii, thats about it. Depends on the family I guess.
My daughter is 4. She likes princesses, polly pockets (which have teenie pieces that drive me nuts), and LOVES Scooby Doo. But I think she is in the miniority with that one (which I love! LOL).

As the mom of a newly 5 year old- I think games are a great gift. My DD loves Hullaballo, chutes and ladders, Candy Land, Matching Games, etc... Shrinky Dinks are also great.

I have a 4 year old daughter and she currently loves:
tea sets
pots and pans and toy food items
play doughs with cookie cutters and other other things
anything princess
babies dolls with clothes
baby carriages
ETA: she also loves drawing and coloring.

My 4 year old daughter loves anything to do with crafts also...drawing, painting, coloring - that sort of stuff.
