gift question... re: jar gifts

every time i look around for christmas gift ideas, i come across the jar idea. it's when the dry ingredients for a recipe are layered (like sand art) in a mason jar. there is a "recipe" card attached for the wet ingredients to be added and baking instructions.

there are also some for soups/stews.

has anyone ever received one?
did you like it?

i know it's the thought that counts, but i'd like to make sure that someone likes what i give them as a gift. and to be honest, i'm still not completely sold on this as a gift idea

I got hot cocoa like this, it was layered with the coco, some kind of vanilla flavoring powder and marshmallows. I thought it was cute but I admit I never used it.

I've seen them and thought they are a good idea

depending on who I recieved it from, I would probably use it. I knew someone who used to bake cookies and give them out. they had the grossest kitchen ever. their cat walked across the counters as she cooked. if it came from someone like that, I would toss it as soon as I got home Chat Icon

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

5 years in a row I did this for our family as gifts. I did chicken noodles soup, chocolate chip cookies, etc.

Every one loved it, but this year DH said he just wants to do "real" gifts for family.

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

I made baskets with these as gifts one year. They were really nice. I put several different jarred goodies (different cookies and brownies). I also included lots of little knick knacks in the basket, an apron, some candles, baking supplies like a mini spatula, little cookie cookbooks, cookie cutters, measuring cups, sprinkles, small cookie trays....and more. I really did them up. They came out awesome.

Some people never use them! My MIL received a beautiful jar of hot peppers in oil years ago and she is yet to use them. She displays it in the kitchen (10yrs later!). She is the "save everything" type.

My mom just did this and gave them out for favors at a party.

The party was for a bunch of 60 year old women who allegedly all loved it.

I probably would use it if it was for cookies or something.

I wouldn't use it, but my DS has a food allergy so I don't let him eat anything I can't see the ingredient list for and we try in our house to only have things he can eat. Sometimes he gets sad if there are cookies and other fun treats he can't eat, even when I have a safe substitute for him.

I've done them many times, some people used them & some didn't but I still think they make great, thoughtful, affordable gifts.

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

I received cookies this way...and I thought it was great...no measuring required...I quickly threw it together one Sunday afternoon when i ended up with a houseful of unexpected guests.

The cookies were tasty too

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

I never got one but I probably would only use it if it was cookies or brownies- if it was soup or something I doubt I would- but there are probably people that are exactly the opposite of me that way

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

i've received them from an in-law but never used them and ended up tossing them after a year or two. I honestly didn't trust the source.

I think they are cute ideas, but as a gift receiver, you need to know your source to use them, and as a gift giver, you should know your audience and whether or not they are a cook.

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

I think they are cute but would never make them...but if you know the person cooks and will make it then its a cute idea.

Re: gift question... re: jar gifts

thanks, everyone!

i really did not think they were that popular.

i didn't want to come across as a "cheap" gift giver, although i think i know my "audience" lol

i will seriously consider adding them to the baskets i'll be making.

I love them, but like everyone else said, you have to know your audience. I love cooking and baking, and I love crafty homemade things, so I think people who know me would assume I'd enjoy it and use it.
