Girl Scouts

Is anyone a troop leader?

My DD wanted to join Daisies in September when she starts kindergarten. I was a GS for like 7 years growing up and I LOVED it.

From the time I found out I was having a girl I dreamed of the day I could be her troop leaderChat Icon

I sent them an email and they mailed me paperwork to fill out and a background check to do. Once I had that all done and they gave to okay I have to take the leader courses.

My question is this: How long did it take to hear back from them once you sent the paperwork in and did the background check? It's been almost 2 weeks and I haven't heard back from them yet.

Maybe I'm just too excited and it feels like it's taking foreverChat Icon

TIA!

Re: Girl Scouts

Congrats on taking the initiative to be a troop leader already!

Where are you located? As you probably know, its all broken down by county and service units so it depends...

Suffolk was pretty fast for me this past Feb. It was like form, background check and training w/in a week!

Re: Girl Scouts

I'm interested in doing this, but can someone tell me exactly what the commitment is? Do they meet every week, at your house, etc.?

Re: Girl Scouts

I am just finishing up my first year as a leader. We are not allowed to meet at our homes. We meet at the elementary school every 2 weeks, sometimes more often if we have a busy month with field trips etc. You are signing up at a perfect time! You will have to take two 2-3 hour classes and be certified in first aid and CPR after you get your go ahead (after your backgroung check). It takes about 2 months to get everything together and be ready to go. So by September you will be good to go. It's one of the best things I ever decided to do, while it's a lot of work it is also very rewarding!! Good Luck!

www.fieldtripfactory.com is wonderful for setting up field trips!!

Re: Girl Scouts

I'm going to be a Daisy Troop leader too.

Sent my paperwork back in the end of March. I know my background check came back clear, and that both of my references sent in their responses. I've yet to hear anything.

I'm giving it another week and then contacting them. I know I have to do 2 of the 3 hour training sessions and a CPR training.

Re: Girl Scouts

thats interesting. We're allowed to meet in our homes in Setauket and my sister in Manorville does her meetings at home. We dont though, simply b/c the parents would rather us meet the kids after school so they dont have to pick them up and drive them somewhere else adding to all the other activities all our kids are signed up for.

I'm finishing up our first year as a daisy leader. Neither of us have had our CPR training yet, but we have a mom who usually attends the meeting that is an RN. So we pretty much depend on that.

Re: Girl Scouts

btw we took a course for about 2 hours then began our troop, a few months later we took our 2nd training. Its nothing big, just a powerpoint about basically different parts of being a leader, where to find forms, how you cant take the girls anywhere w. out permission slip etc. Nothing scary, too hard or even too boring. In fact I actually enjoyed the trainings.
