Girl With the Dragon Tattoo**contains spoilers
I think this is going to make me unpopular, but I really didn't like this book that much. It was ok, but because of all the hype, I wanted to love it, and instead was disappointed the whole way.
I usually love or am at least really intrigued by a character, or characters. I really did not feel any strong emotion towards any of the characters in this book. I didn't really like Lisbeth. She is interesting, but I didn't like her. Or hate her.
The plot was interesting, but I really didn't care so much about solving the murder(s). The way it was written felt very dragged out to me. When he found Harriet, I was just like ok, I kind of thought she was still alive somewhere.
The writing got very detailed about certain things that were not at all important, and I found myself bored and drifting off trying to get back to the plot hoping it would interest me again.
I feel like I'm the only one who feels this way about the book, which makes me wonder if I'm crazy! I'm going to read the Girl Who Played With Fire with the hopes that I will like it more. If I do, then I'll read the last one in the series. If not, I will give up on it.
Anyone else feel this way about the book, or know anyone who does? Am I crazy?

Re: Girl With the Dragon Tattoo**contains spoilers
There have been plenty of books that people have recommended to me a thousand times and when I finally got down to reading it, I hated it.
Like, The Road by Cormac McCarthy. DH loved this book. He urged me to read it again and again. When I finally did, I hated it. I couldn't wait for them to just DIE already and I felt like a bad person for it.
I definitely felt like the beginning dragged a little but once Lisbeth and Bloomquist started working together, I was hooked. I really loved Lisbeth. I thought she was just so.... bad assss. She's one of my favorite characters.
ETA: The next two books sound much more your speed. They didn't drag nearly as much, but it's a lot of backstory to the first book.

Don't hate me for this....
I went into it expecting Lisbeth to be bad assss. I like those type of characters/women. I think the problem for me was that I didn't find her to be that way. I found her...in some cases...weaker than I expected. She is certainly vengeful and can take time and plot revenge, but when caught off guard, she came across as weak, to me at least. In that first rape scene where she gives the guy oral to get the money she wants, I did not expect her to give in, but rather fight there. Yes, she plotted and executed a sick, well thought out revenge, but in that initial moment, she gave in. And then the way she became like a puppy dog with her feelings towards Blomkvist in the end, is not typical bad ***/strong woman. I know she has a twisted background causing some of this, but I just didn't love her character. I felt more sympathy for her than admiration. And I felt like that was not how the character was supposed to be perceived. KWIM?

That's it. We're not friends anymore.
I know what you mean by it, but I think that's what makes her so strong in my eyes. After everything she went through, she knew that a man like Bjurman couldn't be bullied and if she resisted and ended up in custody again then the party is over. I think she accepted it as the lesser of two evils and made her decision from there. They explore a lot more of her mind in the second book. And her thought process is always assess the situation, think of the consequences, and then react. I think she did just that. Would I do it? No, I'd probably go down kicking and screaming. But where would that get me? But I am 100% WITH YOU on the Bloomquist puppy love thing. I was shocked and annoyed at that turn. I really think that was out of character but I guess I kinda just pushed that from my mind. lol!

I had a hard time with it too. I thought it was good, but I kinda felt like alot was lost in translation.

I put the book down 3 times and it took me about 6 months to read. I actually threw the book at the wall at one point because I was 3/4 through the book and nothing had happened. People have recommended that I read the other two books but I just can't do it since I hated this book so much.

I didn't really like it either. The only reason I finished it is because I figured SOMETHING had to happen to make so many people love it. It dragged, the characters were boring, and the plot was too easy to figure out.

Re: Girl With the Dragon Tattoo**contains spoilers
I just finished it after trying to read it three times, and honestly, I can't decide how I feel about it.
I stopped reading it the first time because it was all the financial details of Swedish companies and I was beyond bored and confused by the terms of the case.
To this day, I still have no clue why Mikael went to jail.
Once he started to delve into the case, I was interested and wanted to read more, but then it went back to the damn financial aspect and I was bored/lost/confused again.
I kept thinking that the dragon tattoo must come into it more, since it's the title, but it had exactly two mentions in the book and played no part in the storyline at all. Lisbeth could have had no tattoos and done the same job in my opinion.
I'm on the fence about reading the next two.

To this day, I still have no clue why Mikael went to jail.
Mikael was given a tip from a friend about the Wennerstrom Company's shady business dealings. When he looked into it further, he found that what his friend knew about was just the tip of the iceberg. He decided to blow up the whole story. But the bigger story wasn't real. It was a trap laid by Wennerstrom to get Mikael off the trail of what they REALLY were doing. So it turned out all of Mikael's proof were forged documents and all of his star witnesses recanted what they said. And he was left with a lawsuit for libel.
At the end of the book, Lisbeth finds all the real shady dealings that Wennerstrom was trying to hide and she gave them to Mikael so that he could redeem himself and Millenium.

I liked the story, but I really hate blomquist. He was way too full of himself. And the gf and the husband just let it happen? So weird to me.
I would read more about lisbeth, through.

I'm reading The Girl Who Played With Fire, and so far, I do like it much better. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it is much better, IMO.

Re: Girl With the Dragon Tattoo**contains spoilers
I think parts of it could be confusing and it was hard to keep up with the names, but I loved the trilogy.
I think Lisbeth's behavior starts to make more sense when you read the 2nd and 3rd books and understand her background, etc.
