Girl's name poll and a question

Here's the story...I am 16 weeks, we are not planning on finding out the sex and we have been batting around girls' names for a few weeks and cannot agree 100%

Our DD's name is Katherine Emer. We pretty much solely refer to her by Katherine (we call her Kate occasionally too).

We would like a compatible name...one that's classic, elegant, traditional and stands the test of time. Traditional spelling too.

I have come up with about 15 names, but DH only likes
Eleanor
and
Margaret

I am sooooo torn! I like Maggie a lot and Ellie is cute too, but I'm not sure I like the whole first names. No offense to anyone with either of these, because I do like them, but they're a bit too "old lady-ish." KWIM?

OK, so after all of this...aside from either of these...can you think of any others that might fit our requirements?

Sorry so long...after all this, we'll probably have a boy!!!!

Re: Girl's name poll and a question

There was just an article in Parents about how "classic" names are back in vogue.

Eleanor was one of the names they listed. Chat Icon

Margaret is a family name for me, so if we were to have a girl, I had to work it in somewhere.

I like them both, but I think Margaret goes better with Katherine. If that makes any sense.

I think both are OK, I prefer the nicknames that go with them- Meg, Maggie, and I think Ellie is pretty. (My elementary school best friend's name was Eleanor but we always called her Ellie.)

Eleanor-it is sort of old ladyish. My sister was given the family name "Irene" she is 18 and has never warmed up to it. We call her "I." She is so envious of people with "lighter" names.

I love love love Ellie. one of my name choices is Emmanuelle, we will call her Ellie or Elle. One of my cousins is Ellen, she goes by Elle.

I like Maggie too. All the Margarets I know are Peggys.

As far as classic names:
Elizabeth..I love
Claire
Jacqueline
Caroline
Charlotte
Isabel
Victoria
Emmeline
Danielle

I like Margaret and I love the nickname Meg. I think I'm in the minority, but I do not like 'Ellie'.

Re: Girl's name poll and a question

I like Margaret because I like the name Maggie. Eleanor just sounds too old to me. JMHO. Unless you call her Ellie for short.

I'm a fan of the older generation names too. However, I'm not a big fan of Eleanor or Margaret...no offense to anyone with those names though!

Here are my suggestions:

Emma
Gwendolyn
Victoria
Violet
Jane
Caroline
Charlotte
Abigail

Re: Girl's name poll and a question

I voted for Margaret --- becuase I think it could have some wonderful nicknames...

I also love the names Claire and Grace....DH doesn't like them but I'd love to name a future daughter one of those names.

I kinda like Margaret more than Eleanor. My MIL's name is Margaret and people call her Margot... not sure where that came from.

Re: Girl's name poll and a question

Since you asked, I have to say that both Eleanor and Margaret sound very old-ladyish to me...there is a difference between a classic sounding name and an old-fashioned name imo. I personally like Ellie....it seems "lighter" and younger and still current.

I like them both. I also am going with more "classic" names. My daughter is Grace and we are naming her sister (due next month) Katherine. I also love Maggie and Ellie for short.

Re: Girl's name poll and a question

I love the classic old fashioned names with a twist.

That's why we picked Alyson, just spelled different....then quite a few little girls ended up with the same name on here.

I Love Maggie without it being Margaret.
Eleanor is pretty, old ladyish yes. Ellie is a GREAT nickname, and down south, the name Ellie is popular.

What about Camille? We have a friend named Camille and it suits her just perfectly.

What about if you pick Eleanor, you call her by her middle name? That seems to be a southern thing too....many people call their kids by their middle names for a slew of reasonsChat Icon

I vote Margaret...but as a suggestion...I had a friend who wanted the same kind of thing...classic...so she decided on Maddie Lynn (they were calling her Madeline--but now she is about 11 and she goes by Maddie)
