Girls who had winter newborns
What did you do to soothe them when they got cranky? We have already been on 4 walks today to calm Jack down and one car ride.
I was wondering what you winter mommies did to soothe your babies when you couldn't get outside?
Yesterday in the rain I actually wheeled Jack around my house in the stroller. I guess that would be an option.
Just curious!

Both of my kids are October babies, so I would rock them in the strollers in the house. What worked best for us was bouncing on the exercise ball.

I did this to myself: J/K
I guess I walked around with the Bjorn, or I put the Papasan on with the vibrator, or the swing, or just held them.
And you know how they say you forget things about Pregnancy - I forget things about the first few weeks - like them crying. The way I remember it they didn't really cry that much. I can't remember to be honest - so I better keep it that way if I plan on having another! So see, it will pass, you will get through this and he will stop crying for you!

We didn't have this problem since we live in LA but during her cranky times, we lived in the bjorn.

Swing, bouncy, walking around, white noise really helped - she would calm down pretty much immediately and just zone out.

Re: Girls who had winter newborns
I used the swing and pretty much wore a path in my carpet from walking her around the apartment so much. I would also sit with her on my belly in a dark room and rub her back. That used to help her fall asleep if she was having trouble. DH called it "mommy magic".

Same here - my savior was the running the water from the bathroom faucet. She loved the noise, the lights & the mirror. The swing & bouncy were also life savers for me. It was definitely a very long winter here in Chicago. I had some serious cabin fever. There are a few places that have garage parking, so I would go from our garage to that one when I really had to get out (Target was my go to place when I was desperate.)
ETA: and her music was great too - the Carnie Wilson lullaby CD or Curious George soundtrack (she loved when I danced with her to that one.)

Re: Girls who had winter newborns
I jiggled for six months.
Also, I was out at babygroups and classes from the minute he hit about 6 weeks, so I was rarely home. I also bundled the kid up and took him for walks. Eskimo babies do it!

Re: Girls who had winter newborns
DD didn't care much for the bouncy seat early on. We didn't buy a swing until she was 8 weeks old. The swing did help us from 8 weeks on, but she didn't really like the bouncy seat until later than that.
I held her a lot, rocked her (until my rocking chair broke), slow-danced with her, listened to music, read out loud, nursed her, and snuggled with her in bed.
I also found that the running the dishwasher helped her calm down. We had a loud dishwasher that we only ran at night because we could barely hear the tv over it. I think she recognized it from hearing it in the womb.
ETA: I did take walks with her outside but they weren't to calm her down. If she was fussing before we went out, I calmed her before we left. I was too scared she'd get more fussy once we were outside!
