giving a newborn water
Do Mothers really know best?
It seems like things have really changed since our mothers had us. Back then they started kids on cereal within a few weeks...and now my mom keeps insisting the baby is thirsty and I should give her water in between feedings. Sometimes she is fussy - shes not hungry, not wet, rocking singing playing doesnt work.
Soo I decided to try the water. DD is 7 weeks old today. I gave her 1.5 oz water and she seemed content. is water ok to give them? The dr never mentioned this to me. wondering if anyone else does/did this and if the dr talked about it. I figure its only water..?

Re: giving a newborn water
My DR said not to give more than 2 oz/day as it has no nutritional value for infants. She also said that if the baby is hungry just give more formula.

Re: giving a newborn water
My mom and dad are the same way. They are insisting that if I put rice in her bottle she will sleep, not eat every 2-3 hours, and the same thing with water. They were also insisting that even though BM could be better, it's bad that it doesn't keep the baby satisfied longer. I had to educate them why :)
Ped said water is not necessary, I BF on demand and supplement, so I give her something to drink whenever she wants.

Re: giving a newborn water
At my DS's 6 wk checkup, his doc told me that I could give him water as long as it isn't replacing a feeding. I did give him water here and there, but now that he started on solids I give him water (2 - 3 oz) everyday to help with his digestion.

Re: giving a newborn water
The 1st few VERY fussy weeks we were told some warm water was ok to help with gas... Of course NOT to replace a feeding so it was only maybe 1 ounce. We would boil it then give to DD, it was only a few times...

Re: giving a newborn water
so do you think its ok in small amounts as long as it isnt replacing any feedings? she seemed to calm down after I gave it to her.

Re: giving a newborn water
Ive been giving DS 1oz of water since he was days old... (at my ped. request)
I NEVER replaced a feeding with it... and NEVER tried to"stall" off a feeding with it...
It was purely "extra"- On days that I didnt give him water- he ate the same amount of formula or BM...
Now that he is older... I give him as much water as he likes in a sippy- He perfers it over juice, and its great for him- so thats fine by me!

Re: giving a newborn water
LET ME SEE I JUST RRECENTLY WENT TO HER DOCTOR FOR HER 2 MONTH CHECK UP AND THEY SAID YOU MAY GIVE AN INFANT 1-2 OZ. OF WATER IN A BOTTLE ONCE OR TWICE A DAY. WELL WATER SHOULD BE BOILED AND ALLOWED TO COOL. DO NOT SWEETEN THE WATER. HOPE THAT HELPS. IF YOU HAVE POLAND SPRING THAT WOULD BE GOOD JUST POOR IT IN THE BOTTLE AND HEAT IT A LITTLE.

Yes, small amounts ought to be ok, just make sure it's not too cold... We warmed ours then tested it...

thank you for your response. I had given 1.5 oz but I will just do 1 oz next time. I feel better that you were doing this from only a few days old.thanks!

My ped. is very old- and very old fashioned... so basically everything he tells me to do- is exactly what my mom tells me to do anyway
He was my ped. when I was a baby/child... and Im healthy- so Im confident in all the advice he gives me... however like all Dr.'s his advice isnt always the same as other Dr.'s

Re: giving a newborn water
My dr is younger and seems to have way diff things to say than the things my mom advises me to do. But - I turned out fine the way my mom handled me so I guess her way isnt wrong either.
ETA I wish DD could have seen my ped - he retired right before she was born! thats awesome that you take DS to your old dr!

Actually- he is retired... but still works there 3 days/ week...
I make all my sched. apt.s with him- and if Ryan happens to get sick on day he is there I request him- if not he sees one of the other 2 Dr.s (one of them has been in the practice since I was a child- and I love him too!- the other one is young and fairly new.... he's nice... but I dont have the relationship with him- that I do with the other 2...)

My ped, told us there was no need to give him water. My mother was shocked she didn't believe me when I told her he said that.

Re: giving a newborn water
Both my old ped. and new ped. said to give him as much water as he wants because it will help with bowl movements. DS doesn't like water but was constipated and my new dr. suggested putting dark corn sryup in the water and that should help him. He loves the water with the corn sryrup and he sucks it down. He will drink his 30 oz for the day and have anywhere between 6 & 10oz of water on top of that. I has also helped him going to bathroom, now he goes everyday as opposed to once or twice a week.

Re: giving a newborn water
My doctor said to give her 1-2 oz. each day, but Alyssa gets fussy with it and wants formula instead. But i still try to give her some everyday.
ETA I also started giving water to her at a week old, so dont worry Dawn, she will be fine with it.

Re: giving a newborn water
My first son I never gave him water until he was a few months old and it was fine. With my second, I started giving him a small amount from birth and it was fine. Now at 9 months he drinks water with snacks instead of juice.

Re: giving a newborn water
I think I started at 2-3 months (my ped is on the younger side).
I would be nervous if you are EBF and can't see if the baby is getting the same amount of food (I guess you could monitor time BF and weight), but if you express BM or FF and your baby keeps up the smae rate, it seems like it may be OK

My MIL from Israel kept saying I should. MY doctor said no since I am breastfeeding. At 3 1/2 months she still says no water.

I agree. as long as it isn't replacing feedings...but just my own advice from my experience...my son was extremely fussy and I found feeding him more...but fewer ounces at a time really heloped. I also gave him water with a little chamomile tea which settled him down and his stomach down...as per my doctor...but at that age it was only an ounce ata time.
