We wound up buying a 2008 chevy impala, we love it

if you have a trade in, do NOT mention it until you've agreed on a price!
do research on edmunds.com and find out what the dealer invoice price is on the car you're interested in

Definitely know the invoice price and work up, rather than work down from sticker. Also check the websites from a couple of dealerships to see what is being offered. Also be prepared to walk out if you are not satisfied with what you are hearing.

And, let them know that you researched!!!
I just bought a new car today- the first number they gave me was $26K and change, i told them the invoice price was $18,500 and the sales guy (he was kinda doofy, but nice) goes "oh yeah, i was just about to tell you that!"
DH and I just started laughing 
they gave us their final number, we thanked them and got up to walk out. Surprisngly ( ) as we got up, the manager decided to see 'what else he could do'.
We ended up paying $100 Less than what i was willing to pay and over 6K less than what they started out with.
BE WILLING TO WALK AWAY!!! Seriously, it makes SUCH a difference!!!

Oh, I also went on to Consumer Reports to find out how much they estimated my car was and what the ratings were. Because of this, I saved $2000.

also, when you check the trade-in value, check edmunds and kelly blue book... just to cover all bases. Most of them dont give exactly what those sites say, but it should give you an idea. I didnt trade in though, but i was thinking about it at first so i had initially done that too.

Also, know the difference between the models and their options. I am not sure what kind of car you are looking for, but sometimes dealers can make it look like options are bundled and can drive up the price of the car.

and when you give them your bottom line, make sure that that # includes the destination and handling and any other charges (except tax and dmv charges). Otherwise they may make it seem like they brought the price down, but they'll just end up adding that in after the fact.

Everyone gave great advice. I remember DH doing tons and tons of research. He did great with numbers. We also played the "Yea, well, we'll talk about it" game and the sales guy was like "Let me talk to my boss" ...a few times.
We bought the car! Great deal. I was so proud of DH and all the time he took to research before we went in!
