Going for a HSG tomorrow and I have a question-UPDATE with review
Do I have to fast before the test? My doctor didnt give me any information. Some web sites say you can eat others say not to. Also, did you need to take a laxative the night before? Thanks.
Update
So I went to NY Hospital Queens and had a very good experience. The procedure itself was so quick (maybe 10 minutes). It took longer just waiting for the doctor but my nurse was great and we chatted the whole time.
So I got on the table and the nurse explained the entire procedure and showed me all the instruments. When the doctor came in he also went over everything. He started by inserting the speculum and then the catheter. He told me that b/c I have never had kids my cervix is closed so it may hurt a little when he passes the catheter through. It didnt hurt but I did feel a few seconds of cramping. Once the catheter was in place, the nurse slid me back on the table so my pelvis was in line with the xray machine. There was a monitor next to me which the doctor angled towards me so I could see what was going on. He told me once he injected the contrast I might feel cramping. I was watching the monitor the whole time and at one point I asked him if he had started injecteing the contrast, which he said he did, but I didnt have any cramping. He asked me to tilt my body to the left and then to the right and then it was over. He removed the speculum and catheter which didnt hurt at all.
He said my tubes were clear, but the contrast passed more slowly on the right but it did go through and empty out so he said its nothing to worry about (i had a cyst removed from my right ovary 12 years ago and was worried about scar issue buy there was none).
I am leaking a little contrast and betadine (they used this to clean/disinfect me before they inserted the catheter). But other than that, I have no pain and little to no cramping. He also said it is ok to resume having sex as early as tonight if I feel up to it (but I think dh got grossed out when I told him about leaking betadine and he got worried it would get on him).
Overall, it was a good experience and not as uncomfortable as I thought it would be. I took 2 advil at 9am and had the procedure around 11:30. My doctor also prescribed me 2 doses of antibiotics to take, one right before the test and one 12 hours after.

Re: Going for a HSG tomorrow and I have a question.
I don't think you should have to fast, I didn't eat before mine since it was in the morning (we went out to breakfast after it though!) and no, no one ever mentioned a laxative. I was very nervous about the test, but for me it wasn't so bad. A little uncomfortable and a little crampy afterwards but some motrin and I was good, no worse than AF cramps. Good Luck!

I wans't told to fast.
We just were told to abstain from intercourse from the day I got AF until the day of my HSG.

They are meant for infection prophylaxis. The Dr told me he has only had 1 infection result from this in 11 years.
