Going Organic in the yard and garden? ***UPDATE: Went to Hicks last night***
So this year is my ORGANIC start for my lawn.
I really did not do anything with it for 2 years because of my dogs and DS.
This year, I MUST save my lawn from all the weeds.
I saw the brands "Organica" and others.
Any feedback on those "natural" fertilizers. It is very important for me that they are REALLY safe for my dogs and my son.
Also...
Did anyone use the "Earthbox" for gardening?
******* UPDATE:
So I went to Hicks nursery last night. Talked to few people. They do have organic fertilizer. It's natural (corn based), safe for kids and pets. But it's going to take about 3 years to save my lawn.
So the plan is:
- organic fertilizer 3-4 times per year. - Seed in Spring and Fall
So we are boosting the lawn we have (that will boost the weeds too of course) but we will reseed again in the fall when the weeds died and grass can take over.
With the organic fertilizer I got, I don't need to wait to seed.
I also got "organic" seeds and untreated seeds for the garden.
I looked into the Earthbox but they come with a fertilizer and they could not tell me if it was organic or not.

Re: Going Organic in the yard and garden?
I have been 100% organic since we bought our home in 2004. I'm not familiar with the products you mentioned, but there are tons of new things out now since the green buzz caught on. I really don't do much to try to kill the weeds in our backyard because of the dog, chickens & kids. Everything looks green & lovely but if you look close you might find some clovers or crabgrass. We also don't add much fertilizer back there because of the chickens & we mulch/mow so its not really needed. In the front yard DH uses an organic fertilizer/weed deterent, I'm not sure what the product name was from last year. Going 100% organic & having a lush, weed free lawn on LI is not easy. Look into the variety of grass you have also, it makes a big difference. Most public libraries have tons of books on organic lawn care & gardening.

My brother is a landscaper and went to a class for all the organic products for the lawns. I can ask him what they were...

I'm curious - but if you go organic now - how does that effect what was done for many years before you went organic? Do chemicals from several years ago truly wash out of the soil? Sorry but it is probably a stupid question but I was curious about this.

Well, the grass has been mowed quite a few times in the last 2 years. I have not used fertilizer in 2 years.... hence the MANY weeds we have. I don't want to use regular fertilizer on the grass now. And a lot of weed prevention products stay on the grass for a while. I don't want the dogs to leak chemicals. Or DS to put his hands in his mouth.

My family is in the garden center business, and my father swears by this stuff called BioTone...he sells massive quantities, and has people coming in from all over (people have brought their relatives from other states to get the stuff).
Here's a website:

The fertilizer I got is Espoma. Not bioTone though. Just another one.

Before you add any fertilizers, organic or otherwise, the soil pH needs to be tested. Also, there is a good chance the lawn should be aerated ... If you have done nothing to it for 2 years, just dumping fertilizer on it is not the answer ... start with soil pH, and then you should use the organic in late april, early may ... did you know there are organic weed preventers, too?

Yes but I can't use them if I overseed in the Spring. I would not able to seed until the Fall. So I would have a bare lawn most of the Summer. Not too good with a kid and 2 dogs.
I will probably do a weed preventer next Spring. I will seed this Spring and this Fall. Fertlizer regularly also.
I did not do a PH analysis though. I have to bring my soil sample to be tested.

These preventers are meal-based, like bone meal and blood meal ... they might be applicable, even though you are re-seeding ... check with your nursery ....

I checked with what they have. They told me no seeding even if organic weed preventers. So that's pushed to next year.
