Going to start solids in 3 weeks can you tell me
what you started with?
I really dont want to start on cereal first, I would like to start with avocado and veggies first.
my reason is b/c I read that starting with cereals encourages our bodies to crave carbs and that could be why so many children are obese, who knows, I just want to do whats right and want to see what you great ladies on here did and are doing. thanks

We started with papaya because we were having it for breakfast and I was thinking about starting DS on solids and I wanted to see if he was ready. He was!

Re: Going to start solids in 3 weeks can you tell me
they say to start w/ cereals b/c it's easier on their little stomachs.. i read that children where more likely to be obese if they eat wheat early- not necessarily rice or oatmeal- and you can now get brown rice and whole grain oatmeal- which is much better..
to me, Avocado seems a little rough for a baby stomach right away as a first food- but that's just IMO.

My Dr. had us start with rice cereal because it's easiets on their little bellies. He even said not to introduce anything but vereal for 3-4 weeks. We waited 3 weeks before starting to introduce fruits and veggies.

We started on rice cereal b/c it is easy on their stomachs, and you can make it very soupy, so they don't have to chew anything. I would be afraid to give avacodo as a first food in fear of gagging....... I wouldn't think they would know what to do with a chunk of something in their mouth. If you don't want to start with cereals, I would at least start with something very watery....... I would check with your ped. too.

Re: Going to start solids in 3 weeks can you tell me
thanks ladies. with the avocado I would make it soupy mixed with formula, not chunky LOL My ped said it was ok and that veggies are best started first b/c if you give them sweet first their little palates will remember that and may reject the veggies and he said its good to get them to like veggies early. I read that too that cereal is good for iron and easy to digest. and he said to wait 3 days before introducing anyother food to see if there is a reaction. did any of your DC have a reaction to any foods? is the organic better than regular?

I try to buy the organic whenever available.
I started with cereal, but if you want to begin with veggies, then go for it!
this is what I did:
Rice cereal Oatmeal Carrotts Sweet Potato Squash Peas Green beans Applesauce Pears Peaches Bananas Prunes Plums Then when he was OK with all of that, I started the mixes, like Apple Bananna Strawberry and stuff like that. Then I did papaya, pineapple, orange, etc.
Steven has not had any reactions, but he can't really eat pead and green beans. He gets very gassy, which is why they recommend starting with the yellow and orange veggies before the green ones. I give them to him, but I will mix peas with carrots or greenbeans with sweet potatoes.
We started yogurt as well and he loves it.

Re: Going to start solids in 3 weeks can you tell me
DD is going to be 5 months next week and we have been on solids since her 4 mth mark- she was always so hungry.
She did rice cereal first for 2 wks and then Sweet potatos carrots pears and now today applesauce. I am also going to get oatmeal once we finish the rice.
I only use the organic gerber 1st foods so I am limited in what she can have. They didn't have squash anywhere I looked. I am avoiding sweat peas too for a little bit since my niece had a really gassy reaction to it. Next week for peas- once her body is more used to solids.
She has had no reactions but definately sleeping better. I think she was so hungry all the time.

Re: Going to start solids in 3 weeks can you tell me
Just wanted to let you know that it is fine to start with avacado if you want to. A lot of books actually recommend it. I didn't want to do rice either -- I did papaya, then avocado, then sweet potatoes, then rice, then other stuff. I always mix his cereal with fruits or veggies.
My ped admitted that starting with rice cereal is just a convention -- you can do whatever you want. There's no research behind the recommendation just that rice has a low potential for allergic reaction (but so does avocado and banana) and they can fortify it with iron (it's debatable whether breastfed babies even need that extra iron), but bananas, avocados, etc. are just as suitable to start with.

Yes I read too that you should start with avocado and banana as first foods. Apparantly avocado is "brain" food and banana- I cant remember the benefit other than the norm it provides. I am going to stay away from the green veggies- gassy at first.
thank you all for answering

Also, just be careful with the bananas because they can be binding. She is most likely going to LOVE them, but don't give too much because there is a very good chance she can get constipated. After you've tried a few things and you can start mixing, I would give carrotts or something that is not binding with the bananas to balance it out a bit. Also, if you are trying to avoid giving the fruit first, which I agree with but is really a personal preference, the bananas are very sweet.
