good news!
I wanted to update my injury post but won't let me on my phone. Anyway I have some sorta good news. I'm so excited that I am actually typing this from my treadmill, lol! I am just walking to cool down. So after taking almosta week off doing absolutely no knee activity I got home from work early today and thought what a perfect time to try an easy run on the treadmill while the kids are at daycare. I ran 2 miles slowly, took 20 mins... and no knee pain!!! It doesn't feel perfect it feels very tight and now that I'm walking I feel like it is super tight... but I didn't get the same pain as I was getting. Is it safe to assume whatever I did was not that serious, and that I just overdid it with the tough 15k I ran? I have not seen a dr yet. I need help planning my strategy for the half marathon. My idea is to take it very easy, running slowly like I did today maybe only 1-2 per week, and trying to do other cardio such as bike that is more gentle on the knee to keep up endurance. And not do another long run. Take a bunch of tylenol before and hope for the best that day. Advice? I am just scared to aggravating my knee before, I honestly don't care if I hurt it that day as long as I can finish and then I can take may june to recover. The next race after the li half I care about doing isn't til october.

Re: good news!
Sounds like a good plan, maybe even take one more week off just to be safe. Do the bike or elliptical instead if you can. I injured my shin 3 weeks before the LI Half last year (and that was my first half). I took 3 weeks off before the race (only did the elliptical). My last long run was 10 miles, 3 weeks before the race. I ended up being fine the day of the race! So I think you'll be ok. I would ice the area as well after each workout. Good luck!

Re: good news!
I would be it was just an overuse injury. I would still be cautious and take it day by day. Just don't jump your mileage up too quickly. I remember a coach I know from Team in Training telling me you can take up to 2 weeks off and not lose much fitness; however, I would not go out and run 10 miles this week! Maybe do some short runs and if a week from Sat you are feeling good, attempt a longer run - and stop if you feel pain. Keep icing, stretch, etc....I would imagine if the condition was worse than when you originally posted, you would have felt some pain while running today.
Worst case scenario, if you cannot do the half, there are tons of other half marathons this year. I know your heart is set on it and it's easy for me to say you're not missing much by not doing it, but you have time still and might be feeling really good come race day!

I have read this too.
I agree about taking it easy - I'm nervous about knees, so I would still want to get it checked out.
One thing to consider - what about walking? Time on your feet is a method of training. So even if you run x miles and make up the rest of the time with walking, it will help you with the endurance part of the HM. So if you run 3 miles at 30 minutes, walk for another hour. Then up the time the next week. It seems that you only have two weeks before taper, so it's something to think about.

I will tell you I've been power walking on the treadmill at about an 11:45-12:00 minute pace 1-2x per week to give my legs break and my heart rate gets pretty high! It's a great alternative with less impact on the knees. So I think this is a great idea!! Even for the next week maybe. I know a guy at work who never runs, he only walks 5 miles at a time at a 5.0 on the TM and does the corporate challenge (3.5 miles) in July and is always in the top 5 of my company - he runs the race, but doesn't train running.

Great to know!
It hurts a little bit now after the fact. Walking has been fine during my "rest" week.... so maybe I should just focus on walking and time rather than distance.

Re: good news!
Glad to hear it is getting better- I believe Advil is better than Tylenol though for knee injuries from running. Actually, with my runner's knee I was prescribed Aleve. Hope it continues to feel better Julie!
