Good news from the doc tonight!
I had an appointment with my OB/Gyn tonight for my annual and to discuss TTC. We discussed it last January, but then my back went out in February and we've had to put everything on hold. My doc said he has zero concerns! I'll have to have a c-section, which I already knew. My ortho surgeon said I'll prob have to go under general during labor because of the rods in my back, but the OB said he has seen woman with rods get epidurals so I shouldn't rule it out until it's time and the Anesthesiologist determines if he/she can do it or not. I was SO excited to hear that cause I really don't want to go under!
He also said he wouldn't put me on bed rest if my back pain flares up, just take me out of work. He said there's plenty of pain meds I can take during pregnancy if needed and I shouldn't be concerned at all. He was so unconcerned with it and I just feel so good about it now! I still want to lose some of my weight before we officially start, but whatever happens in the meantime happens. This was the last "approval" I needed because I was so worried about my back and thought for sure I'd have to have my surgery before getting pregnant. What a relief!

Re: Good news from the doc tonight!
Congrats Jen! What great news? Can you either FM me what your back issues are again or tell me? I am curious because my OB said the same thing, but he said I absolutely cannot have an epi.
I have a history of scoliosis (never needed the surgery, but I was in the brace), I have herniations at L4-L5 and L5-S1, but the L4-L5 disc completely slipped out of my spinal column and into cartilage where it is slowly leaking and compressing a nerve. Do you see any specialist for your back?
Sorry for so many questions and I am sorry you got the same news as me, but it is nice in a way to know that we are not alone! I saw a spinal specialist at NYU last year and he said the only solutions to my back were either lumbar epidurals pain management and physical therapy (which isn't working wonderful, but it is managing it) or if we needed, a spinal fusion or disc replacement. But i also have the Rheumatoid, which added to their decision I think!
Good luck and if you need mutual back support (pun intended), feel free to FM me!

Congrats Jen! What great news? Can you either FM me what your back issues are again or tell me?
Thanks everyone!
Mich, I had a spinal fusion 8 years ago that fused most of my spine. There's a small portion of my lower spine that is not fused that now has Spondylolisthesis (sp?). The area is curved, completely deteriorated, fractured and slipped forward. I couldn't move for a few months. The sciatica it caused was unbearable.
I've seen 2 surgeons, the one who did my first surgery and one out here on the island. My original surgeon is like THE spine specialist (did Gloria Estefans surgery after her car accident, worked with Chris Reeves - people fly in from all over the world to see him) and the other one trained with him so I fully trust both of them. Both said I should have another fusion surgery to fuse the rest of my spine to my pelvis. Nothing else will help, not even shots. I refuse to go through that operation again. It was the best thing I ever did back then, but this is not life threatening. I've learned to deal with the pain and during my most recent visit the surgeon said if I can deal with it, then I should be fine. I am okay for the most part and just have flare ups when I stand too long, do too much walking, etc.
Your Rheumatoid problems probably complicate things a lot more. My OB hasn't seen my X-rays so he has no idea how much metal is actually in there. I'm pretty sure I will have to go under GA because my surgeon said it would be nearly impossible to get a needle through the metal to my spine. But both my surgeon and OB are affiliated with Winthrop where I plan to deliver, so hopefully they can work together witht he Anesthesiologist to find a way. Wishful thinking on my part I guess. It is nice to know someone else experiencing something similar (although I wish neither of us were going through it!)
