Good Sam or Southside
I was just wondering which hospital is better to deliver in. I actually really like Southside, but I like the town that Good Sam is in. If you had a choice, where would you deliver?
ETA--I tried to put a poll...im not sure what happened...sorry!

Re: Good Sam or Southside
I have the same decision to make. A friend of mine was a nurse at both and she said the benefit to being at Good Sam is that they have a neonatal unit. Southside doesn't, so god forbid the baby comes out with a fever, or something where it needs observation, the baby would go to Good Sam and you would stay at southside.

Re: Good Sam or Southside
I would have picked Southside. They have the new maternity wing, and my Dr does 99% of his births at Southside versus Good Sam. I had to deliver at LIJ, so I never got to deliver there. I also know someone who worked at Good Sam, and told her sister there is no choice go to Southside.

Honestly I have to agree. I really think Good Sam is not as good as it used to be. First, it is very dirty. Second, my mother has been in and out of that hospital for the last 2 months, the nurses were not very helpful - but she was not in the maternity ward either. My opinion, I would probably go to another hospital. A friend of mine recently delivered there and was not that happy with everything.

Re: Good Sam or Southside
I dont know if it has changed but at Good Sam when my sister had her baby 2 years ago they baby had "designated" mom times...meaning at a certain time they would come and take the baby back to the nursery, this was against my sisters wishes, and she had to fight for a full day to have the baby stay in the room with her till she was ready to have him go back to the nursery.
That turned me off...I dont want anyone telling me when my baby has to leave me if Im not ready...
I like good sam overall...although it gets HAIRY during visiting hours. I was in line to see her with about 50 -60 people for evelvators to the maternity ward and people push and shove to get on and then you wait at the doors of the ward while the nurses just stare at you till its 7:00 pm on the dot , then they open the doors and its like this mad rush ...its ridiculous....
that said, I still may choose Good sam....but I plan to address these issues with them before on the hospital tour and see what they say...

Re: Good Sam or Southside
I delivered at Southside and cannot say enough good things about them. The maternity ward was redone recently and is GORGEOUS! The entire staff was so nice and helpful! The rooms after you deliver are either semi private (only 2 in a room) or you can pay for a private room (I thnk its about $100 a night). I had a c-section so I was there for 4 days and have no complaints whatsoever about them. Highly reccommended!
ETA: Visiting hours are from 12-4 pm, and then from 6-8 pm. Dh can be there from 8 am to 10pm and they honestly dont enforce him leaving right at 10:00, many times my DH was there way past then.

Re: Good Sam or Southside
mt Friend delivered at Southside recently...she said she paid $250 for a private room for the entire stay ( in cash there) and her DH even spent the night the first night after the baby was born b/c shes afraid to be alone in hospitals....They brought him in one of those recliner chairs to sleep on...

My SIL is a Good Sam's labor nurse and I know she is a great RN and truly cares about her patients. I've heard great things about the hospital.

Re: Good Sam or Southside
Im sorry to say i HATE southside hospital. My brother went there sick and they told him he was fine gave him antibiotics and sent him home. He wound up back there 2 weeks later for the same symptoms, since the antibiotics didnt help and it turned out he had a massive blood infection that was to far advanced by the time they figured it out. He was in ICU for 2 months then he died. He was 33 years old. Now my baby girl nieces have no daddy. So even if they had the best maternity ward in the state, i will never step foot in that hospital again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Good Sam or Southside
I use to be an volunteer EMT and I know that we bring all the head cases to SouthSide. They have a pysc unit there. From my own personal opinion a lot of trash goes there, I'll stick with Good Sam.

head cases is a little strong...Sorry had to say that
every hospital will have its good and strong points. seems these two do as well...and what happens to one person, doesnt mean it will happen to someone else.
remember Dr's are not gods..they do they best they can, and unfortunatly sometimes they are wrong..thats human nature...
So trust in the DR you find and tour the hospitals....you will it seems have to make this choice on your own....
See what the DR you choose opinions are as well...and maybe like I mentioned earlier..find a dr who uses both hospitals so you have the choice?

Yikes that's a little harsh. Head cases? Trash? Perhaps you should edit your post so you don't offend women who have delivered there. I delivered there and I loved it. I ended up getting a private room and the nurses were incredibly friendly.

The maternity ward is completely separate from the rest of the hospital. Each baby has a device attached to their belly button for security. If any baby is brought past any doors that exit the maternity ward, all the doors lock and they cannot exit. Also, no one can enter into the maternity ward without a visitors tag and must be buzzed in by the nurses. They go to extrmeme lengths to make sure that your baby is safe.

yes...the doors locl at Good Sam as well..and I described my crazy vistors ordeal..but the bottom line is its for safety reasons. The nurses buzz you in and out... The maternity ward has its own elevator banks as well..

Re: Good Sam or Southside
I didn't say the women who deliver there are trash. So I think you need to re-read what I wrote.
Most of the people who are brought there are frequent fliers. They are constantly high on this drug and flipping out or so drunk they are puking over themselves again and again. That is trash, especially when you bring them to the hospital to get help and they walk out. Hello? I woke up at 3 am in the morning to get your sorry a$$ out of the street and you are going to walk out. Volunteer in the area, and you will fully understand what I am talking about when I say we bring the head-cases and trash there.
