I have a website. How exactly does the getting your website to be one of the 1st search results without paying for it to be advertised on Google or other search engines?

time, links, popularity with the search terms...
if you google search engine ranks...you will get more info to how to increase popularity to your site.

I'm pretty sure that you have to pay for being one of the top spots on google, or any other search engine. and it's A LOT of $$.
that's how they make their money.
at my former job, we looked into search engine placement through an agency. holy cow!
