Got our car seat bases installed and inspected yesterday...here's what we learned!!! FYI

Don't throw out the package for the Snuzzler or any liner you may've bought/gotten for the infant car seat...the inspector said that the car seats are not crashed-tested with these in them, so he told us to get rid of it.

As for a seat protector mat, that's a no-no too, for the same reason as above.

You can use a shade on the window, but NOT one with suction cups. You have to buy the cling-on shade (almost like a tint) because the shade acts as a projectile in a crash.

As for the mirror that I was SO looking forward to having attached to the headrest so I could see my LO in my rearview mirror...NOPE....also a projectile in a crash and extremely unsafe for baby and mom (your eyes should be on the road he says at all times).

The only other thing that I learned was that if it is sunny in the car and you want to put up the sun shade thingy on the car seat, you should pull up the back and leave a space so there is cross-ventilation.

Hope this is helpful to you ladies because I did not know this stuff!!!!!

Re: Got our car seat bases installed and inspected yesterday...here's what we learned!!! FYI

DD was born in February of last year.

I used: The head rest thing in the car seat, the bundle me, I had and STILL have the mirror AND I have the sunshades that do have the suction cups... HOWEVER, they also have clips that clip onto the window if you don't want to use the suction cups...

I guess I'm an awful mommy! Chat Icon

I intend to use all the same when DC#2 arrives....

ETA: I also had the fisher price rainforest seat protector pad. DD HATED the car seat and this was the only way to keep her happy because she was able to play with the attached toys.

Behind the courthouse on Old Country Road. You have to call to make an appointment with Chris.

I know, so did we. Knowing that they are so unsafe though makes me feel guilty to use them and think that everything will be OK :(

Please, I don't think anything less of anyone who uses this stuff! I would've used them too, not knowing the information that I do. NOW that I know this stuff though, I'd feel bad using what I have, you know?

Here's what i don't get about the mirror...

you have to take the headrest off just to attach it, so how can it become a projectile? Wouldn't that mean the whole headrest would have to come off the seat in order for the mirror to go flying? And if so, would that be a little more dangerous then the mirror?

I plan on using it as I have heard it really helps LO in the car. JMHO Chat Icon

Oh and my windows are already tinted so I don't plan on getting anything additional for that Chat Icon

To answer the "how do they come off" question, it's because those cute little plastic tether connectors on the mirrors aren't strong enough to withstand crash forces. The headrest is a part of the vehicle and is made to stay put during a crash.

If you INSIST on using one, try to find one of the mirrors that is flexible and soft. A rigid mirror can shatter and have sharp pieces which can cut your child. Test it by having your DH throw it at your head full force. If it hurts you at that speed, it's going to hurt your kid more during a crash.

i still use my snuzzler, but never in my carseat. it can be used in so many different things, like the bouncy chair or regular stroller when in full recline. you don't have to pack it away or return it. i still use my mirror in the car too b/c I think the way I have it attached, it would take some sort of of insane accident to get it loose. but I wouldn't put something like a piddle pad or seat protector down b/c it could jeopardize the safety of the seat.

wow...i was just expressing my opinion. My mirror does not have little plastic tethers. I really don't think there was any need for your to be so sarcastic and nasty. I would never do something to endanger my child and your comment was not helpul or insightful, just plain rude.

What do you feel was sarcastic? Nothing in that was sarcasm, it was facts and I was dead serious. If you feel that was sarcasm then I am sorry, but your interpretation of my post was wrong.

Those tethers/tether connectors/velcro straps or whatever is attaching it to the headrest are not made to withstand crash forces and can separate from the headrest. Your headrests are a part of the vehicle and are designed NOT to separate.

And I was serious about having your DH throw it at you. It's called the "ouch test".

It is not about being a bad mommy - these items are just not safe IF you are in an accident. IF the conditions are right these items could cause injury to your baby - even you! It is about taking that risk for the possibility of getting into one.

I put these items on my registry and got them, now im going to return them - they are helpful but i think I can live without them

the ouch test, is silly and "real" or not that is what i picked up as sarcasm. throw a pillow at my head and it will hurt if you throw it hard enough.

i think that we still don't have to worry about the mirror so much as god forbid an accident itself. that would have to have some hefty force and im sure the mirror is the least of our worries at that point.

but i see what you mean, and understand your point...

Just to add I was in a car accident and my review mirror fell off and hit me in the face, cutting my lips and needed lots of stitches. So if that could come off, those baby mirrors can too and prob with not as much force.

ITA and want to use the mirror too! He said that although most strap around the headrest, in an accident the straps can easily dislodge from the back of the mirror itself.

I had my car seat inspected and decided to keep the mirror. Anything in the car can become a projectile, diaper bag, pocketbook, grocery bags. If you have an suv anything not tethered down in the back can come loose too.

I get that, It was just MY way of saying, do what YOU as a parent feel comfortable with.

As a parent, I WAS and AM comfortable with using these things. Did I know before hand they are not "recommended" yes, I did.

Recently, we had DD's convertible seat installed, the installer removed the mirror.... as soon as I pulled away, I put it back. For me, it serves as peace of mind to see my DD when I look in the rearview mirror. It also keeps her happy because she can see me.

I never used a snuzzler (I don't even know what that is), so I can't comment on that.

I also have toys attached to DD's car seat AND I let her eat snacks (certain kinds I know she won't choke on), or drink from her sippy cup while driving .

Keeping her happy in the car during car rides will cause less of a distraction and chance for an accident.

These are my opinons.

ETA: You learn as you go. I do ALOT of things I said as a new parent I would never do.

Just to add another point about the mirror. I think it could possibly be distracting to look at the mirror to see what DC is doing. While it may give some people peace of mind to be able to see DC while driving, others may get distracted by it. That said, you need to do whatever you feel comfortable with.
