Grace has a virus...AGAIN!!! BTDT Moms...What do I say to the day care provider???
So, we go to the doctor to recheck her ears because she had an ear infection two weeks ago and was on antibiotics.
Last night she is all congested and crying. DH & I thought it was from teething. So I take her to the ped today and BAM another virus complete with a fever, congestion and all the fussiness that comes with it.
As if I did not feel guilty enough for working three days a week and putting her in day care, now she has been sick on and off (more On) since September. The policy at the day care is if the kids have a fever they cannot come to day care. BUT if the older kids have a cold w/o a fever they can go to day care. My DD is catching EVERYTHING that comes through the door! She is miserable.
I feel so guilt ridden about day care and that I had to stop breast feeding (due to supply issues). A mom at the day care actually said to me (with a attitude) "well, I BF my DD and she has not been sick once" when I asked her if her child was sick often. I almost clocked her. W T F?? I mean we are all moms in this together, why would you say that to another mom?
What do I say to the day care? Can they keep her away from the other kids? Is that possible? BTDT Moms what are your thoughts on this?

Re: Grace has a virus...AGAIN!!! BTDT Moms...What do I say to the day care provider???
Try to remember that this is normal for the first few months at daycare. Alex was sick every other week for the first 4-5 months, but after that she built up a fairly strong immunity and (knock on wood) hasn't been sick ever since, other than a few ear infections, which obviously she didn't catch from anyone else. Think about it this way - if it's not now, it will happen eventually when she goes to school, and better to get her immunity built up now as opposed to later on when it's important that she be in class

Re: Grace has a virus...AGAIN!!! BTDT Moms...What do I say to the day care provider???
I'm going through this now, DD just finished her 3rd consective cold, and this one has a nasty cough. Croup is in her room too. She is still currently on drops for her pink eye she got in both eyes.
Unfortunately, there's no way to shelter her. It's awful, i hate it so much, but i am hoping she builds up an immunity real soon
my ped told us to expect her to be sick for the next 6 months
If you want you could have a chat with the teachers and ask exactly what they do to limit germ spreading. I know my daycare has a bleach solution, and washes evertyhing-toys, bouncy seats, swings, exersaucers, carpets once a week. With all that my poor baby is still alll the time.
Daycare germs!

They wash everything down. Her day care is small and in someone's home. You can eat off the floors, they are so clean.
That other mom pizzed me off and I feel so bad that Grace is sick again. UGH!

Our ped told us that we should expect Alex to get sick about 2 times per month for the first 6-8 months. I didn't believe him at first, but I learned my lesson!

I have 5 months to go! Poor babies! I think sickness that comes from daycare is harder on the mommies than the baby! The guilt is the worst!
Everytime i see the boogie noses, the watery eyes, or signs on the door with the new sickness, my tummy flips, i just want to rescue her!

I don't think you can say anything to the daycare since you signed up with them knowing what their policy was. I'm sorry she keeps getting sick. Hopefully she'll build up enough antibodies over time that she won't keep getting sick as often.

I think it was pretty low of that woman to make the comment about breastfeeding! I am pro-breastfeeding all the way, but by no means is it a magic bullet!
As a matter of fact, my breast-fed-for-6-months, stays-at-home-with-me 8 month old son is just getting over a NASTY cold. My DH gave it to him.

I am going thru this now. The guilt IS the worst. The Dr. Did tell me they ARE more immune when they get to real school - not much consolation but I have to focus on the positive (what little there is...) I feel your and DC's pain!!!!

Thank you. It means a lot to me that the Bfing moms are backing me up on this. I mean Grace was not gaining weight and I started supplementing w/formula. Eventually I lost my supply. Plus, I had to start heart medication at the time as well and I could not BF while on it.
I just feel so bad for her and there is no much I can do to help her feel better.

I agree 100%.
As of the bf'ing, my twin nursed her daughter until she was 3 (yes that's THREE). She swears that her kids are sick less because of it. What I've noticed more than anything is that she DENIES they're sick & will come up with excuses like "Oh, she just had a lot of dairy yesterday" or "She's fighting something off"...um no, she's SICK, SICK, SICK. I do know that while I was nursing, they rarely got sick. It's not like lifetime immunity though. I don't notice my kids being any less sicker than ff kids.

Re: Grace has a virus...AGAIN!!! BTDT Moms...What do I say to the day care provider???
awww I am so sorry that Grace is sick again!
I know its true that sometimes when children first start daycare they do get sick but then build up an immunity.
Just like kids that are not around too many kids on a regular basis will likely get sick when they start school.
I personally don't think thats true with the BFing... my SIL BF all 4 of her kids and they were always sick.
feel better Gracie!

There is a vaccination that you can get... it is strictly for babies who go to daycare.
I agree it is so hard to see babies sick... It breaks my heart to see my nephew sick.

I totally overlooked that part of your original post about what the mom said to you - that's just ridiculous and a very mean-spirited thing to say. I BF'd Alex until she was 6 months old, and she was in daycare starting at 10 weeks... trust me, it makes NO difference - Alex was sick every other week for those first few months!

Is it the Flu vaccine? We are getting it for her in two weeks. Her getting sick again sold me on it. I requested the thimerisol free, single dose vial flu vaccine they only have a few of those left and put on hold for me.

I totally know what you're going through. Jackson has been in daycare only two weeks and he's already been sick twice. We took him to the doctor last night and he has pneumonia!

The policy at the day care is if the kids have a fever they cannot come to day care. BUT if the older kids have a cold w/o a fever they can go to day care.
It's not the day care policy, it's Health department policy. If your daughter had a cold and no fever she could go to day care too. It's not just the older kids. (sorry, I worked in a day care and seem to take an defensive side to these sort of things)
Her immune system needs to be built up. When I put my DD in day care she got strep throat and a double ear infection within her first 2 weeks of being there. Granted she was a bit older (2 yo) but she was still sick!
After a few months she will build up a tolerance to it all. I'll be honest with you though, if you are going to get her the flu shot, just remember, even though it's a "dead" virus they are given, kids still get sick and get flu like symptoms from it. Make sure she is totally over whatever cold she has before getting the shot. You don't want a weakened immune system (from the cold) trying to block the "dead" virus. It's not going to work, and she might get sick again!!
Just a thought!!
