Ray wants to buy his friend a whistle???  I said no way.

My FH is a phys ed teacher and speaking from experience, he can always use a gift card to Sports Authority or Modell's. He also has a really nice Nike watch that has a stop watch because he coaches track and this is really helpful. What about a subscription to Sports Illustrated?

I think you are on the right "track"...A basket with stuff like that would be cool:
Watch, Whistle, gift certificate to modell's, gym bad with initials. I would enjoy when I graduate
