Grammar experts... I have a question for you...

Okay.. May be a really stupid question, but I have always wondered this.

Why are certain words in parenthesis when quoting someone?

For example:
"He was going full speed, I heard a bam and seen him lying on the (ground)."

Edited my post for a spelling error!

Usually it's a replacement of another word used or to fix an omission of speech.

Re: Grammer experts... I have a question for you...

Shouldn't be parentheses, should be square brackets. Like [these]. They are used to replace the actual words of the quote with something that makes more sense for the context.

For example, the original document may have said, "Johnson claimed Smith stole his wallet."

If I am using this as an example in a brief for work, I might want to say "[Plaintiff] claimed [Defendant] stole his wallet." This makes is clearer who the people are without having to go into a longer explanation.

Re: Grammer experts... I have a question for you...

Gotcha... But that really doesn't make it a direct quote then.

Thanks for the explanation. Chat Icon

When you're taking the majority of someone else's words and putting it into your own document, you are always better off doing it this way. Changing only one or two words really isn't enough to not use quotes.

Yikes! The parentheses is the least of the problems with that sentence!
