Question for the Exercise Experts!
I have recently started exercising again. I know it's a lot better to do it in the AM, but I truly can't. I am not a morning person at all, and if I've ever tried it in the morning - it's not even worth it because I'm completely asleep. So, I go on the treadmill at night. Is this doing anything though? I know there are different thoughts, but in some ways I feel like it's not even doing anything because it's at night!
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Re: Question for the Exercise Experts!
The most important thing is that you are doing it. I have read differing opinions on this. Some people think it is better to do it in the morning, because it boosts your metabolism for the whole day. Other things I have read say that if you are not a morning person, it is better to exercise in the afternoon or evening, since you are more likely to work out at a higher intensity and gain more benefit.
i think as long as you are doing it on a regular basis, you will see results. The one piece of advice I would follow is to not exercise too close to bedtime - they say it may be more difficult to fall asleep.

Re: Question for the Exercise Experts!
I have heard conflicting studies about the morning exercise routine too. It seems like its 50/50 on opinions and on studies/reports. I work out mid morning( 930) and at night. I cannot do the AM thing, I am not a morning person. I do 30 minutes warmup either bike or treadmill and 1 hour wieghts in the am( in the gym) and at night 1 hour cardio( jazzercise). I do this about 3-4 times a week and the off days I do the treadmill while watching my TV shows.
I think either way, how or when you exercise you are DEF doing something good for your body. Consistency is the key, am I consistent, nope! but I am back on track, AND what you eat too! and that of course I get off track with too,

Re: Question for the Exercise Experts!
Michal,
I wish I could get up at 6 am and exercise consistently, but I can't. I am not a morning person, actually not that early. Sometimes if I can't sleep I get up and run, but most of the time I exercise at night.
I exercise most of the time at around 9 pm or 10 pm at night. I just finished running on the treadmill right now.
I think if you are doing something 4 - 5 times week consistently then that is good. I really don't think it matters what time of day.

Re: Question for the Exercise Experts!
If you have to exercise in the evening, it's best if you do it on an empty stomach. Try not to eat anything at least 3 hours before and 1 hour after.

Not usually. I feel so much more relaxed. I love the feeling when I am finished running, then I take a long hot shower and put my PJs on and climb into bed. I feel relaxed and kinda relieved.

I am always so hungry and tired between 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm. So, I usually eat dinner when I get home from work at 6:00 - 6:30 pm. (except on Thursdays, I go to a spin class at 6:30 pm, but I always eat something or have a protein shake on those days)
I think that is what gives me the extra energy to exercise at night and then not be hungry. It works for me.
I can't stand exercising when I am hungry, it just doesn't work for me, so that's why I eat and then exercise. What time do you eat dinner?

That's my problem too, but I don't eat untill about 8 & then I am not ready to doing anything untill about 9:30 or 10 & I am afraid I won't be able to sleep.
Michal, as far as burning calories, it doesnt' matter what time of day you it, you still burn the same calories, you could just possibly get an extra boost by increasing your matabolism if you do it in the am.
Another reason the am is suggested, is because for a lot of people they are more likely to stick to to a plan if they get it over with before the day gets in the way & many people will be more motivated to eat healthy foods throughout the day if they start off with a healthy activity.

If you exercise in the morning, most likely it'll have been a long time since you've eaten anything. Food that you ate the night before will be completely metabolized, so your exercise in the AM is attacking fat stores instead of energy that you've jsut consumed.
I also feel really good if I've managed to get up early and do it - it's out of the way and I feel like I've accomplished something for the day.
BUT, bottom line is, you're better off exercising than not, whatever time of day it is! So just do what works for you!
PS: The Body for LIfe book suggests some really good workouts and explains why they work...
