when we went with my family years ago, we flew into rapid city, south dakota.
but, we were there for 2 weeks and drove all around to all the national parks out there ( bryce, zion, mt. rushmore, badlands, arches, yellowstone)
so i'm not sure if that was the closest to the grand canyon, or if it was just the best place to start out driving tour of the west- lol.
either way, it was an awesome trip- definitely have to see it at least once in your life

my dh and i just spent our anniversary in sedona and visited the grand canyon canyon. it's a good 2-3 hours from sedona. we flew into phoenix, and phoenix is 2 1/2 hours from sedona. so from phoenix directly probably about 4-5 hours. i have been to the grand canyon twice and both times, i flew into phoenix.
you can also fly into vegas, but that's a good distance too!

OOOOH wait!! this is what we did, too!! the rapid city trip was another whole trip.
now i remember that we stayed in vegas overnight before we flew home. my sister and i were teenagers and my parents almost got in trouble for having us in teh casinos... LOL

LOL! That makes much more sense. I'm not that good at geography but I was pretty sure that South Dakota is not near the Grand Canyon.

from either las vegas or phoenix it's 5 hours. i've done it both ways, several times from each city and it doesn't really matter. from phoenix you'd get to drive through sedona which is very pretty. however from vegas you get to drive over hoover dam which is pretty cool too. personally i recommend the vegas route b/c there are usually more and cheaper flight options and rental cars in vegas are usually cheap too.

Ang, when we went to Vegas, we took a helicopter ride there. The whole trip was only 4 hours. And they landed in the Grand Canyon for 45 minutes or so.
