Grand Canyon? To go or Not to go?

We are going to Vegas in April and want to see the Grand Canyon. I know it is about a 5 hour trip from Vegas.

My FIL described it as a big hole in the ground and not worth seeing Chat Icon. He's a fun one. Chat Icon

What was your experience? Was anyone disappointed? We are planning on taking the railroad to the canyon since my DC are obsessed with trains.

My parents have gone 3-4 times now in the last 2 years and they find something new to see each time! They did the train ride 2 trips ago and LOVED it - they dod an re-enactment of robbers taking the train over and they said it was hilarious! The kids that were around loved it!

IMO anything that big that was made naturally is worth seeing. My DH and I didnt have time last time we were in Vegas to see the Grand Canyon but plan on going next time we are out there.

The train ride sounds like fun.
Have fun! Chat Icon

I'm voting the opposite of others, but no...not worth it to me. It looks AMAZING, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather stay in Vegas...that's JUST me!

ETA: I don't do well with longer than 1 hour car rides.

I agree, and I'm glad I can say I did see it once. I will somewhat agree that it's "just a big hole", but it's a beautiful one. I think when you rely on the tour companies from Vegas, and it's only a day trip you may not see the most amazing views of the Canyon, but I'm still glad I did it when I was out there bc who knows if I will ever get the opportunity to go back on my own. The train ride sounds like so much fun for your kids, I'd say go for it!

It's awesome, breathtaking, inspiring. I would go.

Vegas is fun, Grand Canyon is serene. I think it is a nice way to break up all the partying.

I wouldn't take a trip specifically to the grand canyon but as a side trip from Vegas - on a train your DC will love - I would go.

It is something to see - it is beautiful and serene. You can't imagine how immense it is until you are standing on the edge.

Re: Grand Canyon? To go or Not to go?

I actually just took a Vegas/Grand Canyon trip 2 weeks ago with my mom and my sister. I HIGHLY recommend going. Vegas was fun, but I had enough after two nights. The trip to GC is about 4.5 hrs and we stopped at Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam along the way. GC takes your breath away!

If you think the trip is too long, take a morning and go to Red Rock Canyon. It is about 15 min drive west of Vegas. There is a 13 mi scenic drive with stopping points to take pics and hike. We took an hr hike to a waterfall. Awesome!

Have a great time!!

i would definitely do it! my thinking is... anything you can travel to see, you should Chat Icon
we went out west for family vacation a couple times when i was a teenager. we went to the grand canyon, bryce canyon, mt. rushmore, zion national park, yellowstone national park... just incredible trips!! the west is so pretty, and unspoiled. my parents went back a few years ago and spent a week white water rafting down in the grand canyon on the colorado river. my mom still talks about it Chat Icon
sure, a lot of people might think of the grand canyon as just a "big hole"... but you HAVE to appreciate its size, and the fact that it was totally made by natural forces!

The Grand Canyon is totally breathtaking - I would definitely go.

As for the train ride, it wasn't really worth the money, IMO. It came across a little cheesy.

We took a helicoptor to the Grand Canyon, it was a day trip and it was well worth the small fortune it cost, it was AMAZING. Do it.

I'm not really sure what there is in Vegas to entertain kids, so I'd definitely go to the Grand Canyon for the day. I agree with a PP -- a helicopter tour might be way more fun than the train, depending on your kids' ages.

Re: Grand Canyon? To go or Not to go?

I would definitely say its worth the trip. Its absolutely spectacular...sooo much more than just a hole in the ground. You know how there are some things when you see for the first time that you remember forever, that just take your breath away? Grand Canyon was one of those for me

Totally worth it. When I went to Vegas we took this one day trip and we got to see the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon, the trip was absolutely the best.

I would definitely go. I went to the Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam when I went to Vegas. It was one April too and the weather was great. Have fun!

Re: Grand Canyon? To go or Not to go?

I'd go. DH and I spent the day and the Grand Canyon and got some great pictures and did some hiking. Flagstaff (the nearest city, where we stayed overnight) is a cute town.

You definitely should see it once in your life. and since you kids like trains it would be a good experience.

I read that the average amount of time spent at the GC is 11 minutes! If you don't hike down for a bit, there's not much to do. although maybe that changed with that crazy U bridge. I think I might have a panic attack going on it though.

You definately have to go. I loved it so much I went twice. The views are breathtaking and once you just stop and look at it you cant even describe it's beauty. The drive is long but enjoy it. It is SO worth it!Chat Icon

Re: Grand Canyon? To go or Not to go?

I'll throw out another idea for you-what about doing a whole day GC and Sedona-GC is def awesome but once you look atit and take some pics its like OK now what?Chat Icon Sedona though is gorgeous and there are MANY rock formations to see all with their own names. There is a village with restaurants etc. Thats what I would do and I lived in AZ for 5 yrs

Re: Grand Canyon? To go or Not to go?

Definitely!

I would do a heli ride or white water rafting though.

It looks like a painting..you don't believe it's real.

Something you should do at least once in your life.

I would love to go back.
