Re: Granite or Quartz countertops?
just FYI - I think the silestone (that's part quartz) markets the antibacterial surface, but I just read an article about how its a load of poo.
We got granite, b/c it cost a bit less and we found a slab we liked. I got it at Jim Mar and was able to negotiate the price - and I liked that I got to walk around the yard and look at all the slabs and pick the one that was the best choice our cabinets and tile, etc

Re: Granite or Quartz countertops?
I saw Quartz at Lowes that was different from silestone. Looks just like granite but they said you didn't have to seal it every year like granite. I didn't like the look of silestone. the granite and quartz were just gorgeous!

Both are gorgeous - it's all about personal preference and what you can afford to spend. I don't think you can go wrong either way!

Re: Granite or Quartz countertops?
Neither! I like concrete, with a recycled counter island. That would be my dream kitchen recycled counetrs

Re: Granite or Quartz countertops?
Its definitely a matter of preference - granite is glossy, quartz is flat. I like the flat finish but we got an awesome deal on a granite counter and I was told that it adds nice resale value to your house. The resealing of granite is no biggie, it takes almost zero time and effort, I wouldnt let that maintence fact deter you if you are interested in it.

Sorry- I just saw this! I am not sure how much they run, but I can't imagine they would be more expensive than granite!

You can get flat (honed) granite - I prefer the honed look to the glossy look.
I LOVE concrete countertops - in the more traditional sense - but that recycled glass/concrete combo is really neat.

They are VERY expensive! We looked into it after seeing the episode of "Living with Ed" where they used recycled coke bottle coutnertops. I don't remember the price but it was $$. I guess there is more labor involved with melting down the glass and then makeing it into a counter? Also there proabably aren't many places that do it so not much competition to bring down the prices.
