Port Jefferson really isn't that far from lake grove. Like 10- 20 minutes. Lots of cute shops and tons of yummy restaurants including seafood!! I just went there on Saturday night and went to Pasta Pasta!! Highly recommend it and try the lobster ravioli!

I'd also recommend going to Port Jeff, but not Pasta Pasta. It isn't a seafood restaurant and isn't kid friendly. We love going to steamroom. Its not a sit-down restaurant - you order at a window and then find you own table. It is almost all outdoor seating, right across the street from the water. We bring our kids there all the time, but if you are looking for more of a sit-down and order type of place, that's not it.

I recently had lunch at JTs on the Bay in Blue Point and it was great along with outdoor seating over looking the bay.
Since you're willing to travel, John Scotts in West Hampton is outdoor, even has a kid night. Its very casual and the ride to it on Dune Road is great. A nicer, not as casual place would be Dockers, also on Dune Rd
