Greece-- Dining Out, etc.

do most of the people speak English in Greece? We will be in Athens and Santorini and I am a vegetarian. I just want to make sure that I can communicate with restaurants, etc. to ensure I don't get surprises in my food.

I guess I can always translate vegetarian and no meat, fish or poultry and bring it on a piece of paper with me.

I had no problems in both places. I learned some key words but found that most everyone spoke some form of English.

I would familiarize yourself with the "meat" words so that you can avoid them...I eat fish so I really enjoyed all the fresh seafood but was able to figure out what was "meat".

You will live on tomato & cucumber salads - the "Greek salad" - I had 2 a day and can still taste it! I had a really hard time finding falafel - I gathered that it is more of an "american-greek" thing.

Avoid any restaurant that is outside forcing you to come in. Look for places off the beaten path.

I had NO problem in Greece- I felt like everyone we encountered spoke English

As long as you're in major cities (like Athens) you'll be fine. Many people in Europe speak English quite fluently....it's only in the smaller, more provincial towns that you might encounter a problem.

Absolutely no problem communicating at all!
