Gross, but i have to ask..Cats and anal sacs

my cat has a stinky butt. i took a kids wipey and wiped her butt, lo-and-behold, there was some brown stuff on the wipey.

DH says she needs her anal sacs emptied. has anyone ever done this instead of having to bring her to vet?

mind you, this is a stray that i had fixed and never intended on being a pet.. well, my heart and my soul made her a "pet".

how can i possibly clean her butt without having to pay out of *MY* butt to have this done?

my dogs had her anal glands popped by the vet - cost about $20... groomers can do it as well (not sure if cat's go to the groomers)

Our kitty unfortunately has a tendency to have them get infected - so we will bring her to the vet which is a whole ordeal and she needs to be sedated, etc. So I've never tried personally.

I'd call them and see what they charge for it - ask if a vet tech can do it and not the vet and maybe they will charge you a lower rate.

I would go to the vet since this is the first time dealing with it. It's unusual for a cat to have a dirty bottom, they are so clean. There could be something else going on, and it's best to get it checked out before it becomes worse.

my dog has issues with it and my vet charges 15.00 to suppress them and drain them... after seeing the stink and the mess i felt it was well worth it

Is your cat overweight? I had a 23 lb cat in the past and she couldn't clean her butt well. I had to do it for her.

my dog had to get hers squeezed. we took her to a vet, it was 8 for it to be squeezed and 44 for the visit. If you can take your cat to the groomers they will wash and squeeze your cat's sacs. Because your cat will stink from what comes out.
