Do cats have anal glands?
THis is a crazy question, but tonight I saw my cat scooting around on his butt...he has NEVER EVER done this...I remember my dog doing it when she was young, and we had to get her anal glands drained...kitty is not in any discomfort that I can tell,...he is still his running nutty crazy self...
Whats the deal?

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
Yes, they do. It's much more common to have issues with dogs, but it can happen in cats, too.

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
OMG i noticed my cat doing this last week too! i was like b/c i have never seen him do that before!!
i looked it up online and SO many websites said that it COULD be the anal glands, but it COULD be a lot of other things that dont need vet attention
he was JUST at the vet like 2 weeks ago to get a physical and she said everything was fine... so i decided to just wait it out and if he started doing it a lot, then i would take him to the vet... he hasnt done it since that day

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
They do have anal glands, but he might not be scooting for that reason. More likely, he's scooting to clean his butt... Cat's generally don't have issues with expressing their anal glands. If it continues, however, I would take him to the vet.

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
I thought they didn't? My vet had told me they aren't like dogs

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
I've heard that when animals do that it may be an indication of worms (the kind that shows up in their stool).

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
Thanks for all the input
I think it must have been a freak thing, because today he was totally normal..no scooting around---maybe he just had an itchy butt! LMAO!

I think it may be worms. When was the last time you wormed your cat?

Re: Do cats have anal glands?
My cat had this in the fall. My cat is plump- all 16 pounds of her, she had a hard time cleaning that area. They do have anal glands- and they can become infected. My little Tiffany's anal glands were infected- they had to express the glands, shave her little tush, and she was on antibiotics 2 x for it. But knock on wood, the infection is gone now.
