Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

so, we are at the beach today and we see a dad and a little girl go to the ridge just before the ocean (where people are sitting, actually, it was directly in front of where we were sitting) and he dug a hole, she sat down and did #2. DH and I figured she was about 4 years old or so and it really grossed us outChat Icon

Now, I totally know that we have NOT been in this situation (LOVE swim diapers) but I have been going to this beach since *I* was four years old, it is a private beach, so no bathrooms, but our parents always brought us home. Plus, anyone who parks there has to live very close by (i.e. in the time that it took the dad to dig a hole, most people there could be home). I can even see going towards the dunes and going there b/c it is out of the public eye....

So, what do you do in this situation?Chat Icon Try to take DC home? Do as this family did? Go to a more seculded section of the beach?

if i lived close enough i would definitely take my child home. at the very least, i would have taken her to a much more secluded part of the beach.

that would have totally grossed me out too Chat Icon

ughhhh...

I guess I would go bear grilles and see what supplies I had.

If I had a bag, I guess I would make him go in the bag, then toss.

there is no way this kid could make it home...he gives me a 2 minute warning.

it would not occur to me to dig a hole.

i like the bag idea! making a mental note of it for the future - i think it's a much better option than digging a hole.

ITA about the moment's notice thing, and the bag is a good idea, and I've even seen little kids go with their parents back towards the dunes to go....but this was so in public...I think that is what got me, KWIM?

The hole thing is just disgusting. It's not like they're out camping or something! Not sure what I'd do, though. That's a tough place to be in w/ a toddler. Chat Icon

That's really gross!! Not really something I'd want washing up on the beach in front of me....
Now I'm going to be sure to keep an extra bag with me...even after Lily is out of diapers.Chat Icon

EEEWWW! I have a little pop up potty called a Pottete (I think). I keep it in the back of my car for situations like this. It has disposable baggies.

Re: Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

This is a good question. We go off roading and there are no bathrooms and we are about 30 minutes from home, so no way we would leave to bring DD home. She is not potty trained now, but I guess what we would have to do is bring a potty with us.

Some of the other people there actually put up a little outhouse tent, which I assume has a potty in it. Guess we'll be purchaing one of those eventually!

I'd be totally grossed out too btw - I think the father should have brought that dd further away from people - like in the dunes or something. We all know that Men don't always think clearly!

Re: Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

I see people at the beach all the time with a potty inside their playhut tents. I thought it was weird at first, but I guess it's better than digging a hole and pooping in front of other people Chat Icon

Re: Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

IMO...I don't see the difference in someone letting their dog poop on the beach and someone letting their child poop on the beach...it's POOP!!! And it's gross.

When I'm at the beach I don't want to step in ANY kind of poop....dog, human, bird....etc etc.

It would have been "ok" if he took her up to the dunes and then scooped it up and threw it out.

But doing it in front of everyone, down by the water Chat Icon wrong.

I agree. And you've been to my beach, you know the dunes are at least a little shaded...

Also, another caveat, you cannot bring a dog down to this beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day and you will get fined if you do..mainly for the poop issue

Re: Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

I understand the child had to go but to do it in front of everyone is not right. He should have taken her home or to a more secluded part of the beach.

I have no idea what I would do but I wouldn't let my child go in front of everyone. I like to think I would clean it up afterwards.

Re: Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

I have a fold up potty seat in my car with disposable bags. I would never in a million years do that. I think I'd let my kid poop their pants before I'd do something so disgusting.

ETA: Plus that's not very private for the kid either. If that kid was 4 - I have a 4 (well almost 5) year old and I would never subject her to that. Or my boys either.

Re: Gross thing I saw at the beach today...

The least they could do is get a bag and pick iy up like dog poop. Human waste can be very harmful to others....I would have said something for sure.Chat Icon
