Growth Hormones for kids?
I mentioned this a few months ago but my niece (who is living in asia - land of tiny petite women) is a bit overweight and short.
My sister brought her to the doctor and through growth plate examinations she is projected to be around 4 feet 9 inches tall when she is done growing.
Of course she is sad at this, not only is she the shortest in her grade she is also the heaviest.
Does anyone know anything about growth hormone injections for kids? Or any other potential treatments?
I know a potential side effect is if you are predisposed toward a disease then the GH could cause it to accelerate.
Thanks

Growth Hormones for kids?
Growth hormone won't change how tall she ends up. It only gets them to the sooner. Personally, I wouldn't mess with that. How old is she?

I had a similar test run when I was younger, they said I would be 5'2 max, I am almost 5'6. I think its all bullsh*t. Id try and get her to eat healthy and exercise and lose weight and not focus on the height.

Growth hormone will definitely cause someone to be taller if taken during puberty. If taken after puberty, it will lead to acromegaly.
My sister’s brother in law did it since he was suppose to only be 5 foot. He is now 5’8. Taller than anyone else in his family.

My cousin did it. My aunt didn’t do it for the older sister and regrets it.

I assume you’re a female? I think it’s a lot more difficult to be a grown man that’s barely 5 feet.

Isn't it his niece he's talking about?

I am 4"11.
I turned out just fine. I never had any issues socially, or physically. Nor do people point at me and laugh while in public.
Oh by the way, my height did not prevent me from landing a super wonderful husband and super powerful job.
But, I just realized that I have lots of step-stools around my house. Probably more than the average adult.

Growth Hormones for kids?
Has she been tested for any genetic disorders? I have Turner Syndrome (missing an X chromosome), and one of the affects is being short/ overweight. I was on growth hormone for 10 years growing up because of it. I took a shot every day. i am now just over 5 feet. I'm not sure what my projected height without it would have been. BUT i'm glad for whatever extra height it gave me. makes it a little bit easier to shop for clothes, drives, reach things myself on the super market shelves HAHA i'm 38 now, and have no lasting affects from it. Feel free to PM me...

5'1 isn't that short actually. My ex was that height and I never thought she was short. But 4'9 is pretty short, thats almost half a foot shorter than 5'1.

I think things are different in the new generation. It seems that every generation is taller and in better shape than the previous.
My dad was only 5'7 (which was average height for his generation I think - he's late 60s now) I'm 5'10 and was considered tall among my peers.
I see high school kids now and they all seem to be taller (not MUCH taller but I think around 6ftish) and in pretty built shape.

You think most hs students are around 6ft? Do you mean the boys or both the boys and girls. I know a lot of hs girls and none of them are close to 6ft.
I’m only 4’11 and the only issue I have is finding petite jeans and pants. My dh is 6’1 and we have one dd who is the shortest in her grade and one who is the tallest. I would not give my oldest dd growth hormones to increase her height.

I think I am missing something. Short people can be in pretty built shape also. We just look more compact.

Growth Hormones for kids?
mnmsoinlove and MrsDrMatt,
I was referring to boys in high school. My point was that every generation/year - people seem to get taller and in better shape. so my dad was normal height at 5'7, I was considered tall at 5'10.
But I play a lot of pickup ball in Queens and now it seems like the young folks are all taller and in better shape than this old man, lol.
When I was young and in high school most guys were skinny. Now it seems like most are tall and in good shape (Im sure this is due to working out. Back in the early 90s people didnt work out as much as now it seems)

Interesting.... I was in HS in the late 80s, and the boys seemed much more built, on average, than DS's HS classmates.
They do seem taller now, though.
I read a few studies on growth hormones, and it looks like the average increase is about 2 or 3 inches, and that's only for kids who are receptive to the treatment. For some people, 2 or 3 inches is significant, but it's not a "cure" for being short. Height is still limited by your genetics, and the HGH just helps you hit the limit of your potential.
I was very happy when DS hit 5'6". That's about the "minimum" height for a guy in our society. Anything noticeably shorter than that, and you get picked on a lot more.
DD will probably be much shorter than DS, but in our society, it's OK for women to be on the shorter side.
