Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
We are in the process of re-doing our apratment. The kitchen needed to be re-done completely - DH is doing all the work himself.
Yesterday we went to Home Depot to have them design a kitchen based on the measurements they took - mind you we are NOT working with a big kitchen AT ALL...we can fit a TOTAL of 11 cabinets in the whole thing...they quoted us $7500 WITHOUT installation DH laughed in the guys face...are you kidding me??!!
After coutnertops, appliances and hardware you're looking at almost $10,000 for a kitchen that will not even fit full size appliances...
apparently the price that is on the back of the sample is just to give the customer an "idea" of where the pricing would start...they weren't even that cheap...
I'm just annoyed because we paid $100 to have them come and take measurements and then it turns out that their prices are BS...I'm just so disgusted with them right now...

Yikes! To be honest, though, I never hear good stories about Home Depot's services.
At least you found out before they got started on the kitchen.

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
have you tried IKEA? I am not sure of the quality of their kitchens, but whatever is on display in the store is very very nice looking. I am sure their prices are resonable.

Actually we went through Home Depot for our kitchen and had a good experience, but it was $$ (although we did a big kitchen with a lot of cabinets for just over that price so I don't know what kind of cabinets you were looking at!!).
If he is doing it himself, I know there are some online places where you can just order the cabinets based on your measurements. I don't have the names of the sites, but I'll ask DH later if he can remember. Good luck!!

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
Home Depot and Lowe's are very expensive and the contractors are not wonderful from what I hear. There are plenty of other "smaller" places you can go and probably get a better price and better quality.

Consumers Kitchens and Baths does a free kitchen design and measures everything. You could give them a try.

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
We recently put in an ikea kitchen and I think it is great. It wasn't expensive at all, we put together the cabinets our seleves and had a friend install them. They also have a great kitchen planner tool on the website, its awesome!

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
We got our cabinets through HD and had a great experience - much better than the one we had at Consumers. We used our own contractor to install but I was happy with HD overall. Sorry to hear your experience was not, which HD did you use? I think the guy at the one we used was so good, which would make a huge difference I think.

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
I live in Westchester and have nothing but great things to say about Home Depot. They installed my kitchen cabinets and granite, all done from measurements to complete installation in 4 weeks. I didn't find their prices high at all compared to some of the design places we visited. They do have different grades of cabinets, you may want to examine that. We ended up w/ Thomasville cabinets, but they do have Kraftmaid and one other. Best of luck to you. Image Attachment(s):

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
We originally went to home depot and got an estimate and a layout. We just went back because we are ready to order. She did the layout again, with some additions and we will have them come out and measure before ordering. We will then have our contractor install the cabinets. We have a total of 23 cabinets, 2 pantries and 2 glass enclosed cabinets and the total, with tax is $6,800.

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
We used HD. I think our cabinets cost abou $6000 maybe a little more. We got American Woodmark--not as good as Thomasville but still good quality (there was a cheaper one too). We have a small kitchen too...9 cabinets. Overall, I wasn't totally dissatisfied but not ecstactic either. thought it should have cost a little less and they made a mistake and never ordered the piece to go next to our dishwasher (its on the end) so the granite guys had to be put on held until it came in.

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
So far I have had a good experience with home depot. We got a layout done this weekend and the estimate for a ton of Kraftmaid cabinetry. Our contractor will do the installation.
I am not sure of the number of cabinets but the kitchen has 3 sections so there are lots of them. We are under budget for the moment and that includes all the molding, toekicks and extras - no appliances or countertops though.
They have Kraftmaid, Thomasville, American Woodmark (I was told they were owned by Kraftmaid at one time) and a few others brands I think.

Re: Grrr...Home Depot - VENT
Wow, that does sound high.
If you need appliances, I suggest PC Richard. I got a bundled package of stainless steel frigidaire stuff. It was a really good deal -- I wouldn't have been able to buy the pieces I got if I bought them individually.
I looked at Home Depot for granite and they were really, really high. I've got the names of places that are much more reasonable. FM me if you want details.
Good luck!
