Guess she won't be wishing anyone a merry christmas anymore!
We were in the supermarket and a sweet woman came up to Alex, all excited, and started cooing, "are you excited for Christmas??? Is Santa visiting your house tonight??"
Alex stopped dead in her tracks, gave the woman a very serious, quizzical look and retorted: "I don't celebrate Christmas. I'm jewish. I celebrate Hanukah"
The woman responded with
Before you flame me - I SWEAR I did NOT teach her to say that! I have NO idea where she gets these things!

I don't understand how some people assume all little kids celebrate Christmas especially if you are out today.
I think your daugter did the right thing!

When I picked up DD today from daycare...she said goodbye to everyone and said "happy holidays"
I did not teach her to say that either...I don't know where she learned it, but she was being PC

Re: Guess she won't be wishing anyone a merry christmas anymore!
A few times last week, people asked us if Abby saw Santa yet. Abby doesn't know Santa from Adam but I said "no." I was then told there was a local holiday festival thing later that day and I just said thank you.
What I appreciate is that Alex did the schooling here. She is old enough and smart enough. In our situation, the intent of the people asking us was so sweet in nature that I simply did not have it in me to say anything. Had Abby had the comprehension to know different, I would have. It would have been easy enough to say "Our celebration of Chanukah has already ended. Thank you and we hope YOU have a Merry Christmas."
It is the responsibility of Jewish women to perpetuate the faith and she is on her way. Congratulations...I think she put ME to shame!
ETA: Abby DID celebrate Christmas with some beef chow fun like the rest of us!

Exactly - I appreciate the sentiment so I never say anything in response, but I AM very proud of Alex for her self awareness about her uniqueness in what she celebrates, and her pride in announcing it to people. I suspect in school they have probably been explaining the difference, because for a few weeks now she's been asking about who of her friends are jewish, who is kosher, etc.

Very well said!!!! And Bravo for Alex I see less and less Jewish kids really knowing the religion and really embracing it!!!

Good for her!!! Celebrating Christmas is relatively new to me, and my son happens to celebrate both - but o one ever asks him about Hannukah. I made sure to tell everyone what he got for Hannukah so it "sticks"

Good for her! I am Christian, but it annoys me when people assume everyone celebrates Christmas.

Aww your little girl is so smart!
I'm glad you posted this because honestly I can see myself saying something like this to a kid at this time ((alot of people have made comments to DS, but he's 1 so he doesn't know lol)). I would have been horrified at myself if I made this mistake, so this def. reminded me not to assume anything!
