Guest Room & In-Laws
DH and I have a 3 bed house right now and when his parents visit from OOS, we have a designated room for guests. If we have DC # 2, we will have no guest room. Ultimately, we would like to renovate our basement as a playroom / guest room (a queen sleeper sofa). Problem is, I'm not sure this will fly with my in-laws. I think they might be offended that they don't have a "real" bed. Granted, DH and I could give them our room and we could sleep downstairs. Anyone have any experience with guests and pul--out couches?

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
The reverse happened for our family. My parents have a pull out sleeper sofa for when we visit them in NC. It's so uncomfortable. They even put a pillow top for comfort and to prevent the sofa from sagging when folding in as a sofa. But it's in my dad's room (i.e. man cave) so he uses the sofa and the bed is better than the floor. I certainly would never expect them to give up their bed. I think bobs may sell them with a bob-o-pedic inside which may be better.

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
We bought a comfy sleeper because our guest room is also our office. My parents stayed a week during the Holidays and they were fine.
I stay on a sleeper when I visit them in FL. Its in their den and while I am there they don't use the den so its like a room.
You could not use the basement when they are visiting so its like they have their own space.

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
When I visit my dad, I sleep on his sleeper sofa. It's very comfy.
My BFF has one of those blow-up beds and we've stayed on that too - also very comfy.
IMO I would NEVER give up my bed, but that's just me.

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
We have been in our house a year and had a guest room with no bed. (We finally got one about a month ago). We just used a blow up mattress when people came over. My ILs/ other guests never complained that it was not a "real" bed. I figure, if they do not like it, then the do not have to spend the night -there is a hotel nearby.

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
We are losing our guest room when our 3rd DC is born.
I think I will get one of the kids a full size bed so we have a bed when guests visit.
We do have an office on the 1st floor and will be putting a small pull out sofa in there. We also have a pull our sofa in our family room, but there is no privacy in that room so we don't use unless we have a ton of people staying over.

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
They will be offended? That is ridiculous! Tell them to give you the $$ then to buy a bigger house! They are lucky you are giving them a place to stay at all and they don't have to get a hotel room!
We have an extra room but, it isn't set up as a guest room- it's an office/storage room. Anyone who stays over uses the pull out. If they don't like it - they can pay for a hotel.
I know I sound harsh but, really, why should you be stressed about puttting your child in the other bedroom? Why should you have to plan your living space on where they will sleep when they visit? I can't b/v IL's would be mad about this!

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
my boy has a small room and a queen size bed in there that dh would love to get rid of.
dh is also not the type to give up his own bed...so queen stays for when my parents visit.
i do have a garage though...so I have thought about keeping mattress and box spring in a uhaul bed bag...pulling it out for when they are here...

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
My Inlaws sleep in a full size air mattress that is about 2 feet off the ground. It gets pushed up against the wall in our computer room, which is also DH's office. It is cramped in there to say the least.
When we have another baby, they inlaws will have to sleep in the basement on the air mattress. It is currently not suitable for overnight guests, but then again, I'm not pregnant yet, so we have time to work on that.
When my ILs stay with my SIL, sometimes my SIL & BIL give up their bed, and they sleep in their daughter's bedroom on the floor and on the bunkbed. Or MIL sleeps on the bottom bunk and FIL may sleep on the couch in the living room.
My ILs visist for a minimum 10 days at a time when they come up, and they split thier time between us and SIL. It's not lavish by any means, but it has to work.
Who knows...if your ILs insist on having their own private room, maybe they'll surprise you and start staying in a hotel.

Re: Guest Room & In-Laws
I don't anything wrong with the pull-out, they can't expect you not to put your kid in your 3rd bedroom just to keep it open for when they visit.
However, i would also consider keeping a queen size beds in the kids room and when they come you can let his parents stay there and double up the kids, either keep an air mattress for the kids, or when it comes time to get #2 furniture, get them a trundle bed!!!
