Guns at Presidential Town Halls/Speeches?
Okay, I totally missed this in the news this week, so maybe there is more than meets the eye, but I've been hearing people brought guns to some meetings Obama spoke at in Arizona and New Hampshire. So, maybe there are always a few crazies who try to do this, but the NRA and two Senators are defending their right to bear arms?!? Am I missing something or is it not a bad idea to allow people to bring guns to a place where a President is speaking?
I went to an all day workshop Laura Bush organized several years ago, mostly involving people who work with children in some capacity. George Bush also spoke at this workshop briefly. To attend, I had to give the Secret Service my name and social number in advance. The day of, I had to go through a metal detector and my bag was searched throroughly. All of this I thought was reasonable considering who I was going to see. I'm not sure why it's okay to have a gun around Obama though.

I think it is absolute insanity!!! The Secret Service's job is hard enough without having to deal with these nuts!

Agreed! I don't care who the president is, bringing weapons to a political event is NOT a good idea. Even if it's just to make a statement- bring a sign.

I agree. There are lots of ways to get your point across without making a stink about bringing a gun to a packed public forum.
I'm surprised the First Lady's shorts generated a bigger debate than this issue, although maybe I shsouldn't be, it's a little more clearcut that this is insane IMO. I'm just surprised anyone is defending these people, especially senators?
