The mall office can't do anything for you. CALL THE COPS NOW.
not sure what do I say to police? since all I have is her taking my PIN down, dont have her on anything else them that, would they still take action based on just that?
You can file a police report for pretty much anything, so even if they don't "do" anything, it will be on record. I would ask your bank for new card number and pin #

That is horrible! Definitely call corporate and let them know you have filed a police report.
On another note, while I always use my debit card for purchases I always use it as credit and not debit. You actually have greater legal protection and less risk if you use it as credit. Just a PSA :)

That is nuts!
But I have a potentiallly dumb question. If someone has your pin number- say 1234 right- and they dont' have your actual, physical, debit card, what can they do with it?
I usually only use credit cards to shop - so I don't know much about how is works. Can they use the pin to buy stuff online- without the physical card?
There are devices that can be placed on the machine that you swipe your card that take your card # (this is what happens on ATMS a lot). They can they create a fake card with your number and use it.
To the OP I would be LIVID and blasting them everywhere. It does sound like the manager was in on it as well. Please keep us updated.
And with that I am going to check my card that I used on my last shopping trip just to be safe.
Oh ok- thanks for the explanation. That is CRAZY!
Yes, they make a dummy card. This just happened to a friend of mine. And purchases were made by the thief at McDonalds, so you know a card had to be present yet they had both their cards so a dummy clearly was made.

Re: Gymboree shoppers be aware!!!
yes, we had a dummy card made from DH's debit card when we went to an ATM, I guess there was a skimming device which copied it. we only found out when they went on a shopping spree a few days later in CT. The bank had to freeze/cancel the charges and give us a new card.

I was going to say the same thing. DH told me to always say Credit when they ask if you want to use it as Credit or Debit.
This is a pretty horrible thing that they did and I really feel that you should call the police. You can't have been the first and only person they've done this to and they need to be stopped!

I work in retail at a corporate office...call their corporate office. We take these things very seriously and they will conduct an investigation. Working with the loss prevention department in retail...you wouldn't believe the things people get caught doing on a daily basis

I would call your bank now too - maybe they will have to reissue cards to everyone who shopped there.

Gymboree shoppers be aware!!!
WOW!
As a cashier, I make sure to never even LOOK that direction when they put the PIN in. That's horrible!
If i happen to be looking that way and they go to put in a pin instead of hitting green for credit, I quickly look away.
Sheesh!

Re: Gymboree shoppers be aware!!!
Yeah I think I'd call my local precinct or go there to file an incident report... not 911, the local precinct but I think it is better handled in person. Then, I would make sure to get a copy or copies of that paperwork and fax it, email it, and snail mail it directly to their corporate headquarters with a letter containing all of the info - store location, description of what took place, the cashier's info, the managers info, etc. Everything. And make sure mention that you made a police complaint and report - and that the copy of it is enclosed. Then, see what happens.
And just so you know how good it was that you did that... Just last week my checking account was hacked into and someone bought over $1,200 of online purchases as well as other stuff. They must have obtained my PIN#, or my debit card info., etc. and it wasn't a credit card -- it was my bank debit/check card. Not good!! Luckily, my bank is great and credited me back the money and sent the report to the fraud dept. Then they froze my account, did what they needed to do to protect me, gave me a new card, and a new pin, etc.

Re: Gymboree shoppers be aware!!!
I was working at the riverhead outlet center and these 2 young girls stole customers cards and then used them to shop. They went on a spree.
It took a few days but the cops did get involved. They were immediately fired from the store I can tell you that.
definitely call corporate and not the mall office.

I would call corporate office, GymboListens and file a report. Make sure to get her name when calling corporate.
I shop in that store a lot, usually there are 2 women that work year round. But for holidays seasons, in comes new seasonal staff. Hopefully you get it sorted out soon. That is pretty crazy.

Re: Gymboree shoppers be aware!!!
awful
but - what were they going to do with your pin? your credit/debit info in encripted on their end. Unless they are able to "copy" your card (there are machines out there now copying CC/Debit numbers from cards) not much she can do with it ... right?
Not that it makes it any less scary, just not sure what she would do with your pin?

This is exactly what they do. They have a machine that copys debit cards and then they use it to purchase things, etc.

Gymboree shoppers be aware!!!
I don't know...maybe I'm reading too much into this but the fact that she tried to rip the piece of paper away from the OP, to me, admits that she was absolutely doing something wrong and knew she was caught - no matter how much she tried to cover herself with her BS story afterwards. That's extremely scary because who knows how many others she's done this to that didn't pick up on it?
I would definitely file a complaint with corporate and with the local precinct. If nothing else, it's on record. I cannot imagine corporate not investigating this. Theft like this is a huge offense!

They take your card# and your PIN and make a dummy card. Then they go to an ATM and take out $$$. This happened to me at Michaels a few years back, had 3000 dollars withdrawn fom my savings account from an ATM in Newark. File a police report at your local precint.
