Gymnastics classes

As a former gymnast myself, of course I want to enroll DD in a mommy and me class ASAP.

The gym I used to teach at wouldn't take babies any younger than 18 months (but prefered 2 years for most). Are there any gyms on the island that start earlier? Any recommendations of gyms? I didn't love the gym I taught at and wouldn't enroll her there - plus it's too far from where we live. I'm looking in Nassau county.

We're starting Saf-T-Swim in the fall - she'll be about 4 months old. I'm going to need to some major cash for all these activities.

I don't know where in Nassau you are, but my neice goes to Five Star Gymnastics Academy in East Rockaway. They have mommy and me Gymnastics. I believe she started before she turned one, she is now 6 and on the competitive team there- it's a great gym.

Re: Gymnastics classes

The Little Gym in Merrick starts mommy and me classes at 4 months old. We have Kiera currently enrolled in her age appropriate class and I am so happy with them. She started going when she was 2 1/2. She loves it and it has given her an incredible amount of confidence and strength. I'm not sure how the younger classes are but I can tell you that we are very happy with all of the classes Kiera has been in. Here's the website. Little Gym

Re: Gymnastics classes

I too was a gymnast when I was younger so I was very excited to find a mommy and me class that DD (14 mos) will be starting next month. It's far from Nassau though (Medford).

Re: Gymnastics classes

Thank you all - Five Star isn't far from me. We also may move in the next year or 2 (we're looking now) to Suffolk, so it'll be good to have some recommendations out there too... DD will still be young. The gym I worked at was in Suffolk and the kids got on team one of 2 ways - either they were "teacher's pet" (regardless of talent) or the mom b**ched to get the child on. I want a gym that will develop her skills early. By the time my parents enrolled me I was 9 - I was flipping back handsprings on the front lawn (and landing on my head of course - amazing I survived childhood) for years before that, then they decided I might get hurt and should probably learn how to do it correctly. I want DD to have the best chance of advancing in it - of couse pending she wants to. If she decides later that it's not for her - I'm not going to make her do it - I only ask that she finds another activity and sticks with it and does it with the passion I did with gymnastics. However, I figure it can't hurt and can help her develop the skills to do well with other sports or dance or martial arts.

How much do classes go for these days? I want her to do Saf-T-swim also. I'd better start saving up!

Re: Gymnastics classes

Where in Suffolk are you moving to? Gym Nest in Medford is supposed to be great. So is Gold Medal- they are in Greenlawn, Centereach, and Rocky Point. HTH!

Re: Gymnastics classes

My old coach from Deer Park was working at Gold Medal last I heard (I had wanted to drop by about 2 years ago to say hi, but never got around to it) - that may be good when we move out there... we are looking for homes from Melville to Nesconset - North of the LIE. DH likes Kings Park a lot... Gold Medal's Greenlawn location would work - right?

They don't take them until 18 months at Gold Medal.

My son went to Gold Medal and I didn't like their pricing structure. You had to pay each month and it was auto deducted from your account. It was something like $80 or $90 a month and you had to give a month notice to quit or something like that. I'd rather pay for the session. The place I signed DD up for is $140 for the Summer and then they have a Fall/Winter session that runs to January and it's around $245 or something and a session from January to June for around the same price.

We went to Gym-nest and Nastics also when DS was little and I can't remember how their pricing worked.
