ha-he, ha-he, ha-he - L&D breathing question
Just read a birth story on Pregnancy that reminded me of my friend's delivery. Both said that the breathing was didn't help them at all.
I didn't take Lamaze (Bradley instead). I always thought the Lamaze breathing didn't make sense. Who am I to judge a birth method that's been around probably longer than I've been alive.
Bradley breathing is more deep breath in, slow breath out - along the lines of yoga.
Did any one find the Lamaze breathing helpful?

I actually did. Believe it or not when I am very sick for some reason I always breath like that even before I took Lamaze. In lamaze we did this exercise, your partner squeezes a pressure point with all different strengths during the different stages (supposedly representing different stages of labor) and if you were doing the right breathing at the right time you didn't feel it as bad, as if when the same pressure was applied with a different pattern of breathing. Not sure if I explained it clearly but the exercise really stuck out in my head.

I did - I watched an hour long video! But when you're there, on the table, anything goes so I'm not sure if I truly stuck to "Lamaze" Breathing.

I did use a breathing tehcnique but not that one. I felt it really helped me also combined with focusing.

I didn't practice as much as I should have but I did try to follow the breathing techniques the nurse was telling me while I was actually in labor. Not sure if that helped but I do think not closing my eyes and focusing helped a little, but not much. The epi...now THAT helped!

We just did that exercise in my childbirthing class.
It actually seemed to work. I've been using it to get me through leg cramps, etc. and it's been doing well for me.
Our exercise this week is to get two ice cubes in a zip lock, hold them in one hand until they get unbearable and then breathe through them.
Haven't tried it yet...I'll let you know.

I am the one who mentioned the "ha-he, ha-he" in my birth story
I did find it helpful to get me through the contractions until I got the epi.....I think it takes your mind off the pain, if only for a second

I know. My friend told me during her labor, she tired herself out from breathing like that & started screaming "Just get me the epidural!".

Re: ha-he, ha-he, ha-he - L&D breathing question
I had back labor and the breathing I learned did help. I only had to do it a short while b/c by the time the pain really started and I got the epi, it didn't last that long.
If anything, I found trying to remember and concentrate on my breathing (as DH and I laughed about it) took away my concentration from the pain!

Re: ha-he, ha-he, ha-he - L&D breathing question
I did some deep breathing excersizes and it help me tremendously. I'm not a big fan of the ha-he stuff I feel you can easily revert to hyperventilating . Whenever I'm coaching a laboring patient I try deep breathing with them first if that doesn't work then I might try that.

I had a lamaze coach come to my house and give DH and I a private lesson, she was great and informative....only problem, I wound up having a c-section at the last minute!

Re: ha-he, ha-he, ha-he - L&D breathing question
I was never on the "table", as I had a c-section, but I was in active labor for 15 hours, 10 of which were unmedicated. I had the most unbearable back labor, and the only way I made through it was to pace the halls, and use breathing techniques - so, yes, for me, it did work, though all that went out the window when they started me on pitocin

To be honest I didnt take either. Quite a few people told me to save my money because my body was going to know what to do naturally and if it didnt, thats what the nurses were for. JMHO Im glad I didnt bother. I just breathed the way I needed to in order to get through to the next contraction.

I beleived in, used and loved Lamaze. I didn't need an epi. I'm not a hero or anything I just walked in fully dialated s it would've been to late anyway!

Re: ha-he, ha-he, ha-he - L&D breathing question
I was the ultimate critic for lamaze, I thought how the hell is breathing going to do anything. Well, it was a life saver! I only took a short class, that really didn't focus too much on lamaze. But I labored at home for 2 days and those he-he-he whoos got me through it!

Re: ha-he, ha-he, ha-he - L&D breathing question
I took lamaze with my first. The breathing absolutely helped me. I was in labor for 29 hrs (with pitocin), and thanks to the breathing I was drug free (no epidural) for 20 hrs. After 20 hrs, nothing was going to help...I needed the drugs.
