Had my Quad AFP test today
I had a sonogram and a blood test. The sonogram came out wonderful. The baby was waving during the sonogram..it was so cute!! I will get a call next week to discuss the details. But they told me they would have said something today if there was a problem.
The only thing they noticed was that I have mediterranean thalassemia, a form of anemia. They want my dh to go fro a blood test because he's half puerto rican and they are carriers of sickle cell anemia! I was shocked. I told dh that he needs to take a blood test and he doesn't see the need to since our first child came out ok. He's being very stubborn.
Anyone else have anything similiar happen to them?

That is so weird! I've never heard that before. My doctor knows both of my parents are PR and she never mentioned anything about sickle cell. She knows this because she assumed I was Italian (DH is) and had asked me about this other disease that is common amongst Italians. When I corrected her, she said, ok no problem. Well, she said "ooh the baby's going to be a HOT mix"
Honestly, I've never in my life heard of PR's being carriers of sickle cell.

Re: Had my Quad AFP test today
I always thought African American's made up the highest #'s of sickle cell carriers. I'm 100% puerto rican and this was never an issue during my pregnancy.

Re: Had my Quad AFP test today
I learned that anyone who is of an ethnic decent from the mediterranian area, north africa, middle east, and southern europe (especially greece, italy, spain) could be carriers for sickle cell...
I bet it's the spanish part of the PR background.... but when it's combined with an italian mom, I guess I can see why they would want you to be tested.....

Aww, Stef I'm glad everything was good!!
Just tell Rob to get it done, I'm sure the baby will be fine since Jared had no problems, but its not such a big deal to go and get the blood work done just to be sure!

So glad that everything went well. I bet you are feeling great! I never heard of PRs carrying sickle cell. I'm 1/2 Hispanic and no one mentioned it.

I have mediterranean thalassemia--beta type to be exact. I had to go on extra iron for both of my pregnancies. My DH was tested and TG he is clear. Not to scare you I do have a cousin that has a very sick child(Cooleys Anemia) that needs blood tranfusions every month(her life expectancy is to about 25 years old). Both parents were thalessimia trait carriers. My whole family went and got tested after we found out about their baby. I had to repeat what I wanted to be tested for and spell it out to the nurse at my general practioners office--they were clueless. I think they should bring back marital bloodwork again. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your DH's bloodwork. BTW The couple with the Cooleys Anemia child(my cousins) are now pregnant and this child does not have it. It's all in the odds. Please let your DH know of their situation

Thank you so much for sharing this...I have to show this to my dh.
My dh had bloodwork done 2 years ago, as well as a complete physical. They didn't tell him then that there was anything wrong with his blood. But I'm going to make him go.
